Sim injector / remote Sim manager instructions

Hello,
I’m looking for the instructions on setting some of the functions in the remote Sim Management (Sim injector) like those found for a local SIM.

In particular,
How do you enable data roaming?

But also
How to set up 3G/LTE selection
Band selection
Bandwidth allowance monitor
Monthly Allowance

Thank you,
Tim.

Hello @tgorter,
Welcome to the Peplink Forum.

The SIM Injector is simply a remote simcard hosting device, so the functions you are asking about are not going to be configurable within the SIM Injector. The functions you are asking about can only be configured within the celluler router/modem settings of the system requsting access to the remote SIM.

Happy to Help,
Marcus

I agree with @mldowling , it’s a bit confusing at first, but once you understand where the settings are it’s easier. If your using it in remotesim mode , LAN side login to your local router and go to the advanced tab , remote sim management. Add a remote sim host ip address.
Then you can define the sim slot, sim slot name, apn setting, and roaming.
On the cellular WAN change the sim card choose to Remote sim only.
I don’t see a option to add the LTE/3G ,band selections, or bandwidth allowance for the remote sim yet.
You can set bandwidth options if you use fusionsim, https://simcloud.peplink.com
Perhaps @sitloongs can comment on when we might see band selections, 3g/lte , and bandwidth allowance on remotesim. I agree that this is needed.

Let’s move this under feature request to allow Engineering team to consider the request .

Thanks Marcus,

I have come to understand that configuration for the SIM are done on the modem and not on the SIM injector.

And the instructions I have found are very scant on how to set this up, with the basic resources that I have found (and to summarize them on a single page.) to be…

This PDF (How to setup HD2 Dome with local SIM Injector)
which only leads up to connecting the SIM injector to the Dome (but does not outline on how to set up the SIMS)

And this youtube video MAX HD2 Dome with SIM Injector | Quick start guide
Where you can find how to set up the SIMS

And also I didn’t find the Sim Injector in the peplink firmware download page so luckily in the forum (thanks @SteveTaylor) I found this link for the latest Sim Injector firmware.

And if you look in the Remote SIM Management page (of the modem) you will see that
Untitled

Beyond putting APN credentials there is no further options, (in my case urgently important) Data Roaming!

FYI.
loaded now in the HD2 Dome is firmware 8.0.2 build 4407
and the injector has firmware 1.1.55

Thanks,
Tim.

Hi Tim,

please install the 8.1.0 RC4, there ist the DataRoaming checkbox available in the SIM-Toolkit. I’ve tested Roaming SIMs with this FW.

Have fun

Hello Tim, @tgorter
Many guides in the forum and done by members who are enthoutiests for the products, this way the guides are compiled on real world experience by those out in the field. Let us see if we can get a fresh guide together for everyone.

The new firmware mentioned by Dennis @dennis.hofheinz is certianlly worth using is using for the SIM Injector. Any new guides done will be based on the latest Firmware Versions. We admire your persistance and the comunity here will continue to help you where we can.

Out of interest, where in the world are you based, if you are in Australia, you can PM me for some local support.
Happy to Help,
Marcus

Hello Marcus,
Yes, with both the comments from @dennis.hofheinz and also a message from the support desk I have now signed up to the BETA program to download the latest RC (although I’m not sure which RC it is, its labelled as 8.1.0 build 4925).

And yes, I tried to collate the material I found into a single post so it may save someone searching too much.

I’m in Barcelona now working with Superyachts and Special events.

Thanks,
Tim.

Hi Tim,

the latest Firmware for the Injector is http://download.peplink.com/firmware/fw_rsimServer_2_1.1.60.bin

I would recommend to update to this Version

The RC is the latest Version you can get - you found the right one

Best wishes
Dennis

Hello,

In addition is there an explanation on how multiple SIMs work in the remote management?

i.e. I have selected 2 SIM slots of the SIM injector to be dedicated to a modem (entered on separate lines as given in some note somewhere, but when you go back is shown in a single line). but how are they treated by the modem?

Untitled

which SIM is actively used, what happens when data expires?, can they be alternated? etc…

Thank you,
Tim.

Hi Tim,

this is correct.
If you would like to use multiple SIM cards the separator would be space.
Example: xxxx-xxxx-xxxx:1 xxxx-xxxx-xxxx:3

You can see this in the Details of the Cellular Modul page of the Router. There is a line where the SIM-card details can be seen

Regards
Dennis

Hi Dennis,
Thanks, with the details of the cellular module page you mean simply which SIM card is in active use. Yes I see that, under the row “Remote SIM” and with it the adjacent detail below that row.

But this does not explain how
The active SIM can be chosen (if I now wish to use the other SIM allocated)
Under what conditions it chooses the SIM to use (no more data, periodic change?)

Thank you,
Tim.

Adding this post to this discussion about what I just learned from the support desk. Trying to keep it all in a single location about Remote SIM and SIM injectors.

Currently the SIM PIN is not supported in Remote SIM. expected fix in firmware ver 8.1.1
to get around this issue now is to first disable SIM PIN via a mobile phone.

Regards;
Tim.

I had the same question which I posted in another thread (below) but it wasn’t answered.

I am used to the granular control within the MAX Transit line of products, where you can set signal thresholds, bandwidth maximums, and other settings which would force a SIM change if one of those rules were hit.

Does the HD1/HD2 Dome honor those settings? In my testing, it does not seem to honor the signal level, and I have no idea how it would know the bandwidth amounts since that UI appears to be only for local SIMs.

The signal threshold is per cellular WAN setting. Therefore, it should work regardless where the SIM is coming from.

If you still see the device not working (perhaps on 8.1.0 RC2), please shoot a ticket and we can take a closer look at it. We have retested and seen it working on 8.1.0 RC2.

Thanks,
Eddy

@Eddy_Yeung

I do see that signal threshold settings is defined at the cellular wan level.

However how about

That seems to be defined on Sim Card A/B and there isn’t an area for remote sim.

@Jonathan_Pitts

LTE/3G selection ,band selections or bandwidth allowance will not take effect for RemoteSIM connection. Request filed and Engineering team will consider the feasibility.

Hey @sitloongs
We have found that the LTE/3G selection does apply to RemoteSIMs

@Harry_Thompson

May i know how you do the test ?

Hi @sitloongs
The following screenshots where taken over a three minute period and took the unit from LTE-A to 3G and then back to LTE-A by changing the LTE/3G setting from “Auto”, to “3G Only” and then “LTE Only”
This router is running 8.1.0 and the SIM Bank is on 1.1.60.
It would be great if the data fields which are not used when “Use Remote SIM Only” is selected where greyed out so that we know they do not have any bering on the connection e.g. Data Roaming which is under the Remote SIM Management menu. We also need the data roaming MCC introduced for RemoteSIM.

Would it not make sense to move the Remote SIM Management tab to the Cellular details page? This would be much more logical and easier to access settings.
