We had a customer inquiring on purchasing a VWAN license. He purchased a device that had primecare and the 2x VWAN license however, he could only see the 2 VWAN license and not the FREE VWAN that came with Primecare.
After some digging, we were able to locate the following information on the forum Virtual WAN FAQ which advises that the VWAN licenses are not able to be stacked with the free license provided by Primecare. This is advised in 2 places here: Virtual WAN FAQ. The customer purchased an additional 1x VWAN license so he could utilize a total of 3 VWANs. Also note, 3 is listed as the max VWANs capable on a Primecare device.
PrimeCare devices have the capability to use a maximum of 3 Virtual WANs. To enable the functionality, you can purchase additional licenses via our online store.
Can you provide me some example cases on how to increase the number of Virtual WAN?
Case 1: My device has an active PrimeCare subscription, and I am using the free virtual WAN that comes with PrimeCare. I have not purchased any Virtual WAN Activation Licenses before. If I want to use two virtual WANs on my device, should I purchase LIC-VWAN (1 Virtual WAN Activation License) or LIC-2VWAN (2 Virtual WAN Activation License)?
You should purchase LIC-2VWAN. The Virtual WAN Activation Licenses do not stack with the free virtual WAN from PrimeCare. Purchasing LIC-VWAN will simply convert the free PrimeCare Virtual WAN into a permanent one.
Do I need to purchase a Virtual WAN license for a device while it’s on PrimeCare?
No, if a device is on PrimeCare, one Virtual WAN on VLAN license will be included. As long as the device remains in PrimeCare, Virtual VLAN WAN functionality will remain. The free Virtual WAN is only applicable for users without any purchased Virtual WAN licenses.
So the feature request, is keep the VWAN 1 free. If you purchase another VWAN license, you should have 2 not 1. If you purchase 2, you should have the maximum of 3.
If I buy a vWAN license either specifically or by renewing primecare (which is non transferable) and then I buy another. I should now have the sum of those purchased vWANs available.
Anything else makes the end customer feel cheated and is impossible to defend.
Exciting news for everyone! We will be implementing the stacking logic in our upcoming firmware update (the one following 8.5.1).
In essence, if a device already has one VWAN included with PrimeCare, they can simply purchase the LIC-VWAN (1 Virtual WAN Activation License) to have a total of 2.
What about users who do not have Primecare active, but have purchased the feature pack which includes 1x VWAN activation. Can they currently stack licenses or will this also be added with the new firmware?
The issue only happens when you have PrimeCare and perpetual license colliding on the same features. The upcoming firmware will resolve that. Perpetual license stacking should be workable. If not, please contact us via sales or support.
We’ve just configured a B One 5G in 8.5.1 with its two Ethernet WANs and the ‘PrimeCare’ VWAN. And subscribed to a LIC-VWAN licence to have the 2nd VWAN as confirmed in the posts by the PEPLINK team at the end of November. No stacking of the PrimeCare VWAN and the additional VWAN licence. Only one VWAN visible. Support has just confirmed that stacking will only be available from release 8.5.2. Quite annoying. How do we activate the 2nd VWAN given that we can’t wait for the future 8.5.2?
