What is the Virtual WAN Activation License?
The Virtual WAN Activation License allows you to create 1 x virtual WAN on a particular VLAN, on either WAN or LAN interface. This means that you can create a virtual WAN on VLAN for a WAN port, or a virtual WAN on VLAN for a LAN port.
Is this the same as WAN as LAN?
No, the Virtual WAN Activation License is not the same as WAN as LAN. WAN as LAN allows users to use a physical WAN port of a device as a LAN port. With a virtual WAN, users are not limited to the physical WAN ports of devices.
However, having a virtual WAN on LAN is limited by the LAN interface bus. This means that the bandwidth range of your virtual WAN is within that of the LAN. For example, if your device’s LAN bus is 1Gbps, the bandwidth of a virtual WAN on LAN is capped at 1Gbps.
Is this the same as a WAN Port Activation License, such as BPL-210-LC-WAN or the Failover License, such as MAX-BR1-MINI-LC-FC?
No, the WAN Port Activation License enables the use of a third existing physical WAN port on the device. This means that the access of WAN is limited to the number of physical WAN ports on a device, while the Virtual WAN Activation License allows users to create a virtual WAN using any of a device’s WAN or LAN ports. Similarly, the Failover License MAX-BR1-MINI-LC-FC only enables Wi-Fi WAN or the use of the device’s LAN port for Ethernet WAN.
Do I need to purchase a Virtual WAN license for a device while it’s on PrimeCare?
No, if a device is on PrimeCare, one Virtual WAN on VLAN license will be included. As long as the device remains in PrimeCare, Virtual VLAN WAN functionality will remain. The free Virtual WAN is only applicable for users without any purchased Virtual WAN licenses.
What if I need more Virtual WAN on the PrimeCare devices? What options are available?
PrimeCare devices have the capability to use a maximum of 3 Virtual WANs. To enable the functionality, you can purchase additional licenses via our online store.

Can you provide me some example cases on how to increase the number of Virtual WAN?
The following cases aim to help you understand the logic when trying to extend the number of the Virtual WAN of your device.
Case 1: My device has an active PrimeCare subscription, and I am using the free virtual WAN that comes with PrimeCare. I have not purchased any Virtual WAN Activation Licenses before. If I want to use two virtual WANs on my device, should I purchase LIC-VWAN (1 Virtual WAN Activation License) or LIC-2VWAN (2 Virtual WAN Activation License)?
You should purchase LIC-2VWAN. The Virtual WAN Activation Licenses do not stack with the free virtual WAN from PrimeCare. Purchasing LIC-VWAN will simply convert the free PrimeCare Virtual WAN into a permanent one.
Case 2: My existing router has an active PrimeCare Subscription and is using the free virtual WAN. What happens to my device’s virtual WAN if my PrimeCare expires?
Once your PrimeCare expires, the free virtual WAN will expire as well. To continue using the virtual WAN on your device, you can either extend your PrimeCare subscription or purchase LIC-VWAN to have a permanent Virtual WAN Activation License.
Case 3: If I want to have two Virtual WANs on my device, should I purchase LIC-VWAN or LIC-2VWAN?
This would depend on whether you have previously purchased LIC-VWAN.
Regardless of PrimeCare validity,
If your router does not already have LIC-VWAN, you will need to purchase LIC-2VWAN.
If your router already has an existing LIC-VWAN, you will need to purchase LIC-VWAN.
The virtual WAN licenses (LIC-VWAN, LIC-2VWAN and LIC-3VWAN) do not stack with the free Virtual WAN that comes with a Prime Care subscription.
Case 4: If I’ve already purchased LIC-2VWAN for my device and I want to get a third virtual WAN. Should I get LIC-VWAN or LIC-3VWAN (3 Virtual WAN Activation License)?
You should get LIC-VWAN as LIC-VWAN will stack with the existing LIC-2VWAN.
Which Peplink models can I use this license with?
The Virtual WAN Activation License can only be used with all PrimeCare models (except for UBR LTE and Transit Mini) and some selected models.
Is it ready for use now?
The Virtual WAN Activation License will be ready for use with devices running Firmware 8.3.0. If you would like to purchase and use this license now, a special firmware is required and can be downloaded here.
