When I connect a Sprint Franklin U772 USB modem to my Balance 20, the router dashboard always shows it “Connected” even when the modem’s configuration interface indicates “3G Unavailable”. How can I get the router to discover the actual cellular connectivity?
This model is not on the Supported 3G/4G LTE USB Modem page yet. Please create a Support Ticket for us to take a look.
What a dilemma, to create a USB modem support ticket, the device is supposed to be in good coverage area, but my problem is triggered by bad coverage.
But I’m not sure I even want to pursue this any further as I’m really starting to dislike this modem. It gets much worse reception than, say, an iPhone, and I don’t think it’s simply going to work for my location. I also noticed that when there’s no coverage, it turns into a captive portal, and responds to any DNS query with its own IP address. I wonder how common this is with USB modems. Feels like a bad idea to me.
That’s really common. Lots of pay as you go SIMs do the same thing when out of funds and can easily fool the DNS healthcheck and sometimes the SmartCheck Healthcheck too.
The only health check that works in these instances in http lookup, where you point it to a known URL with known content and then search for a keyword.
When used with the ISP captive portal - the URL gets directed and shows the captive portal content instead of the expected real content so the healthcheck fails.
