Upgrading from 580 to 580x - Backup, HA, and Compatibility Concerns

Hi everyone,

I’m considering upgrading from my current 580 model to the newer 580x and have a few questions about the process. Specifically, I’m wondering about:

  • Backup and restoration: Is it possible to backup data from the 580 and restore it to the 580x? Can I do the reverse, backing up from the 580x and restoring to the 580?
  • High availability: Can I establish high availability (HA) between the 580 and 580x? Are there any special considerations I should be aware of when setting up HA between these two models?
  • Compatibility challenges: Are there any other compatibility challenges I might face when using the 580x and 580 together? For example, are there any specific versions of software that I should be running on both devices to ensure they work well together? Or any weird behavior someone faced when using both together?

Any insights or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Backup and restoration: Utilities to migrate from the older products, e.g., 380 to 580, do not exist for the X series (unless recently released and we Partners were not notified.) The process is a manual one. However your Peplink Partner may be of assistance in this (at least I know we offer to help our customers in such circumstances.)

High availability: Peplink’s consistent recommendation has been to use identical models and, preferred, HW versions. In this case you can see why – the config files of the two devices are significantly different, even if the UI is similar.

Compatibility challenges: See previous comments. I would not use these two devices “together.” The 580 is a wonderful machine but maybe it can find another home?
