Starlink Slow through all our Peplink devices

We have constant issues with Starlink performance going through all of our Peplink models: Max BR1 PRO, Max BR2 PRO, EPX.

Connecting WiFi directly to the starlink, will get 300Mbps down. Using any of the above Peplnks, maybe 25Mbps at best.

We have changed the MTU to 1500, no change. We have tried to force the port to 100Mbps, no change.

Not load balancing with cell or anything else.

Any ideas?

Put a cheap switch between them and see if there’s a problem with auto negotiation.

Hi Dave,

Also one to check if there is any cable damage.

What if you connect the Starlink directly to a PC, do you see the same?

No Cable damage. Directly to a PC, it rocks. 10x faster.

There is no freaking way I am going to accept a fix by putting a switch/hub inbetween the starlink and my peplink.

I’ve been getting a lot of the same reports from my end users.
We’re going to take it back to lab and see if we can’t figure out whats going on.

I just ordered a cheap switch. I will report back if that works or not. If it does that is a clunky solution at best.

same issues, is this resolved?

Just bumping this a bit to see if any of the people found a resolution. We are using two starlinks and their speeds in our PL BR2 Max are very low.

@KNTR ,

Could you please create a ticket for the Support Team to investigate this issue further?

Regarding the low performance observed, it may be related to factors such as:

  • Connection quality
  • Device location
  • Signal obstruction

The Support Team should be able to help verify and further analyze these conditions.

Hi Guys, I am having this exact problem with my Starlink Mini connected to Max BR1 Pro 5G router. I disabled bypass mode to revert back to the Starlink WiFi as my only fix.

I dont think it matters but my setup is trying to use WiFi inside the van via the AP One AX with the logic that I would have stronger WiFi from within van.

Direct to Starlink I get 150 Mbps download and through Max BR1 Pro, 25 Mbps. Upload seems equivalent at 14 Mbps.

I tried a bunch of random things in the settings but dont really know what I am doing. Hopefully, these pics of my WAN setup can help with suggestions. Please let me know if you spot anything.

Hi, @Gripster

Please…

Which BR1PRO?
5gD? 5gN? 5gK?
Software Version?

Thank you.

The issue was on previous SW version and continues with latest SW 8.6.0

I have Max-BR1-Pro-5GK-T-PRM

The Peplink router and WiFi is all new equipment and I have been slowly trying to get it all ready for out next trip starting next week.

Thank you for your help.

Hi, @Gripster

Have you try to install a L2 switch, between Peplink WAN and Starlink?

It helps a lot. 8-(

@MarceloBarros, can you please recommend a L2 switch? I did see others talking about a switch, but I have no experience with these so would need some directions.

Hello, @Gripster

Yes… I confirm… try to use a L2 switch, between the WAN of the Peplink and the Ethernet port of Starlink. It is sad… but… There is a hardware bug… That impact the performance of some Peplink devices, when connecting direct at Starlink dish.

Funny… but you can use ANY standard L2 switch… like netgear, tplink, dlink, trend, etc…
Just need to be a device, made by a good network vendor.

Cheap switch.

Adding to @MarceloBarros, our go-to for reliability, cost and size for this type of situation is currently the Netgear GS105E V2 switch.

(Note: The link is to the local Australian Netgear pages)

There are other models to choose from if you feel like spending more money and getting fancy, though simplicity wins when you need a Layer 2 switch between your Peplink’s WAN ports and a troublesome StarLink system.

Have a good week,

There’s definitely something wrong with Peplink’s Ethernet handling.

I, too, get slower than expected Starlink speeds, and I just assumed it was them. The mention of using an intermediate switch set me off doing some testing. I just set the port on a Max BR1 Mini hw3 to 100-half, don’t advertise speed. Power cycled the Starlink, and under Status, it shows it’s connected auto-negotiate, 1 Gbps. The Peplink shouldn’t connect at anything other than 100-half, and the Starlink shouldn’t see any auto-negotiation from the Peplink side at all, so it should be forced to match speed.

Unfortunately, there’s little diagnostic info available on either end.
