Starlink international routing causing latency

We are having a Starlink latency problem, and we’re hoping that installing and configuring a Peplink router (instead of the existing client’s router) can solve the problem.

Specifically, there are severe latency issues when accessing critical database servers hosted in Rwanda, specifically 192.243.57.243 and related IPs.

Problem: Traffic to the Rwanda-based database servers is being routed through South Africa, causing unnecessary delays.

Test Results:

Traceroute confirms that traffic is taking a detour through South Africa before returning to Rwanda.

Ping tests show high latency that is unusual for local traffic.

Possible Cause:

We suspect this issue is due to misconfigured routing within Starlink’s network, possibly related to BGP peering or incorrect geo-location routing.

Can we solve the problem of traffic to 192.243.57.243 not staying within Rwanda but instead routing through South Africa?

Is there a way to adjust routing policies or update peering agreements to ensure local traffic remains within Rwanda?

Thank you so much for any suggestions.

Robert

Only Starlink (onwer of device/network) can solve this kind of traffic issues.

is this only affecting some traffic to rwanda, or all?

ie can you route from that starlink, to some IPs/endpoints in rwanda, with acceptable latency?

If so, you can fix it by running a Peplink in a location that can both a) get routed to from starlink in rwanda and b) can also route to the rwanda database servers locally. This peplink can create an sdwan tunnel to the pepink on the starlink, and proxy the traffic through that tunnel.

If you disable the public IP from starlink you might find that they can then route you direct to the internet from the local ground station as they will likely break out using a nat’d public address in country (if you are connected to a local ground station). It might be that they either have no Rwanda prefixes so have to route you out of South Africa to give you a public IP address.

But regarding the routing, the only ones who can change that are Starlink.
