SMS Control target long code

I have scoured the documentation I can find, and the fact that I find no mention of this seems to indicate I’ve got some gap in my otherwise obvious knowledge. . .

I have a MAX BR1 - I want to enable SMS Control. Simple enough, and instructions are straightforward. But, to send an SMS from my device, I need a phone number/long code, right? My device won’t let me just type ‘SIM TEST’ or something and then automagically fill that in like the video shows. Again, this is probably elementary and something that shows my advanced hobbyist (not networking professional) status, but I’d be really really grateful if someone would let me know what I am missing.

Are you trying to know the format to send a SMS to a BR1 ?
Or are you trying to know how to send a message from the BR1 ?
MAybe some context of what you want to accomplish?

I want to send a message to the BR1 - specifically to take advantage of SMS Control features. And while I understand the SMS Control command syntax, I do not understand how to provide my phone (Android, in my case) with an address of some sort (since there is no phone number) so that the message actually gets to the BR1.

If its got no MTN (aka phone nunber) how do you expect it to receive an SMS?

If ithis is simply more a case that you do not know the number assigned to the SIM by the carrier you can get this in a couple of ways from the Peplink:

  1. On the dashboard, click the IP address of the connected cellular WAN, the MTN if it is available will be listed there along with the other technical details.

  2. Details view of the cellular WAN via Ic2

  3. Ic2 SIM report will also list the MTN.

If the carrier doesn’t assign a number, which can be common data only SIMs from many providers, you are frankly a bit out of luck here and either need see if the carrier can assign you a number or use a different provider.

Will, thanks - that was kind of my question too, but you provided the answer as to where to look for that. Seems neither of my SIM cards has an MTN, but at least now I know what I am dealing with. That was the missing piece, and since there were no listed MTNs in my case, I kind of didn’t know until now what I didn’t know, or have.

Thanks again, to you and everyone who replied.

If you are unsure about the SIM card in there, you can always slot it into your phone, and call yourself / send an SMS to yourself and see if a number shows up in callerID.
But for that, as mentioned, the card needs to have a MTN assigned, and voice services activated.
