Slow Speeds on my Pepwave Max Transit Mini

Good afternoon. I ordered this router and got it earlier this week. I’m on a 25mb plan with Verizon. When I run the speed test, I have never gotten over 5-6 Mbps. However, through the hotspot on my phone, I’m getting 25. Any ideas?

What phone do you have? Since the MAX transit Mini has a CAT 4 modem inside, I suspect that you are seeing the difference between carrier aggregation and modulation in your phone compared to single carrier usage on the CAT4 Tranist.

Sorry for the delay. At the time, I was running a Pixel 4a, but just updated to a 7 Pro. I’m thinking I may try to find an external antenna for the router to see if that helps. I don’t have fantastic reception where I am, but I’m still not getting more than 5 or 6mbps of speed.

Your original Pixel 4a is a LTE-A CAT 11 device. That can aggregate 3 carriers (with 256 QAM) and supports 4 x4 mimo. That modem is capable of significantly more throughput than the transit (as a CAT4 device there is no carrier aggregation or modulation of any kind).

An external antenna will help, but you should not expect to reach phone like speeds on the Transit Mini - that’s not the point of the device.

If you want phone level speeds, but a BR1 Pro 5G to get much closer to it.

Thanks for the info, Martin. I actually ordered the router through Verizon and initially, he told me this was supposed to be a 5G router. i don’t have 5G service yet, so it doesn’t really matter, but I’m wondering if they sent me the wrong one.

At the moment, I’m pretty frustrated.

Ah Dan - that Sucks! I’m sorry that you’ve not been given what you were promised - that would frustrate me too.

A 5G router should always out perform a 4G router on 4G purely because its a more advanced and powerful radio, so can push the 4G technologies on the mast as far as possible. That’s why it’s worth buying 5G if you can afford to - even if you don’t have service yet.
