Settings for journalist video live streamining

Hello All
I own a MAX-BR1-PRO-5G, and I am using Speedfusion. I am feeding a Starlink via WAN (priority one) with an eSIM (also priority one) to broadcast live from remote locations.
Which settings will you emphasize to optimize Speedfusion with this set-up, knowing that my top priority is live video streaming? (I am streaming, so reliable upload is key.)

For video streaming, you want your packets to arrive on time without lots of delay due to retransmissions (in case of TCP) or excessive packet loss (in case of UDP) and you are willing to pay the additional bandwidth cost. In that case, create a Speedfusion (sub)tunnel with WAN Smoothing set to “normal”. Then your video stream will be duplicated over both the Starlink and the Cellular link. For other kinds of traffic (e.g. file transfers, uploading an edited video,…) you should disable WAN Smoothing. Therefore, you better create two subtunnels: one for regular traffic (without WAN Smoothing) and one only for streaming (with WAN Smoothing) and use outbound policies to redirect the traffic through the right tunnel.

As you are using Starlink, setting Forward Error Correction to “low” will also help, especially for the file transfers, as there is often some packet loss on that link, especially on the uplink. You can enable it on the streaming subtunnel as well, the additional traffic is not that excessive, but there you are already covered well with the WAN Smoothing.

Echoing what Peter has said, but depending on your available bandwidth and cost, owing to the fact you will be using twice the bandwidth with WAN smoothing, which is really more designed for RTP traffic such as Zoom or VOIP, where the lowest latency matters the most. As a professional event broadcaster, I would recommend instead using the dynamic weighted bonding tunnel with both of your WANs in priority 1, and adaptive FEC turned on. Not only will this help with stability issues with Starlink but will prevent any packet loss on your UDP stream over the cellular as well. You don’t need super low latency for a one way RTMP stream, using WAN smoothing is more of a waste of bandwidth.

I have a Transit Pro for my livestreams and this setup is pretty bullet proof.

Hi Pablo,

I would suggest adaptive, that way FEC will only be applied to the WAN that needs it, unlike low or high which applies the FEC to all WANs, resulting in more bandwidth overhead. This will work with any video stream, including SRT.

WAN refers to any connection that is outside of your router’s own networks, so cellular networks are still classed as WANs!
