Questions about HA

Hi,

I am a newbie to Peplink and would like to know more about peplink behavior in high availability mode.

Regarding to

Peplink | Pepwave - Forum and

I have the following questions, assuming my topology would be the same as the one in Peplink | Pepwave - Forum :

  1. How many public IPs do I need for both active and passive nodes? One IP per ISP WAN link for the whole set, a total of 2 public IPs? Or One IP per ISP WAN link for one node, a total of 4 public IPs? Also, when failover, will the passive node take up the public IPs of the failed node?

  2. Mac address issue when failover: will the passive node take over the mac address of the failed node when failover occurs? If not, will it use any methods to update the arp table mac address record of the ISP router so that the ISP router will still forward the traffic to the newly active node?

Hi Leo,

Public IP addresses
NAT mode - One IP per ISP WAN link for the whole set, a total of 2 public IPs
Drop-in Mode - ISP1 (WAN1) needs 3 public IPs. ISP2 (WAN2) needs 1 public IP.

Failover:-
NAT mode - Passive node take up the public IPs of the failed node
Drop-in Mode - Both units having same VIP since running VRRP.

  1. Passive node take over the mac addresses of the failed node when failover occurs.
