Question on Dropped Calls When Using Starlink with Peplink B One 5G and Multi-Carrier eSIM

I have a -62db LTE cellular signal entering Peplink B One 5G router. I tried Peplink’s ESIM twice, but Speedfusion was a total bust. I still had dropped cell calls on my Starlink system at my cottage. Starlink faces north and I have a number of tall white pines in the way causing obstruction. I thought Peplink could fix my dropped cell calls…but its been a total bust. Grok advised the high latency could be caused by the Peplink, multi carrier esim.

A starlink and a cellular connection on a B One 5G with SpeedFusion cloud enabled and all traffic going over it should fix undelying latency and packetloss issues.

Are you using Speedfusion Cloud?

Yes I had Speedfusion hooked up to the cloud in Toronto, and currently Chicago.
It did not fix my latency issue…and dropped calls onl Starlinks wifi. I have several hundred signal interuptions per hour from the heavily treed area I am in. The other internet/streaming services works well…but my cell phone drops all the time. It chewed up so much of my ESIM plan with peplink, it just wasnt worth renewing the Peplink Esim. My own Peplink rep tried to get it working…but couldnt.

Does sound like a tricky situation. When you have an obstructed Starlink there are two things you have to do.

In the SpeedFusion profile you must set a latency cut off that is quite aggressive so that when obstructions trigger latency increase the voip traffic gets moved to cellular.

You also need to set the ‘Ignore Stsrlink Outages’ option in the Starlink WAN settings. This stops the healthcheck mechanism on the Starlink WAN triggering all the time which causes extended Starlink WAN outages (and higher cellular consumption) as the traffic moves to the cellular.

With regards usage, I would have suggested a config where you have a dedicated wifi ssid for your smartphones. That way you can treat traffic from them differently than the rest of the network and prioritise network quality by letting them use both starlink and cellular.

The rest of the network devices can then have an outbound policy that makes them sticky on the Starlink so they don’t overconsume your cellular data.

Which starlink do you have? On v2 I originally had issues with trees. Once they launched more sats and I set it flat it worked. Have you tried a high power dish?

I will look and see where the ignore Starlink outage option is in the wan settings.

Last thing, I have a version 2 dish…and am wondering if an upgrade to one of the more current version with a view of 140 degrees might help with the signal drops?

Hi Mystery…Its a version 2 dish …I might give your set it flat suggestion a try and point it straight up. Have been thinking about the more modern dishes having a wider “scan angle” of 140 degrees…more to investigate

I have been doing some more research on my strong signal, lousy latency issue (over 100ms) in my fringe cellular signal area .

I have a Bolton Technical Long Ranger parabolic antenna on the cottage roof and it fed LTE signal into my current Wilson 70 Pro booster. On the indoor panel antenna cable, I put a signal splitter before the Panel, and t-d another cable off into the Peplink B one 5G router cell port a, with the other paddle antenna’s connected. I was measuring -62dbm signal with lousy latency.
Previously I had tried Waveform’s 4x4 antenna but with cable length and no 4x4 signal booster pre Peplink–it failed miserably…not enough signal.

However I did some more research using gemini AI, and my latency issue may be due to my Wilson Pro 70 booster…which also boosts signal…as well as noise.

So given that I do need a cellular booster in a fringe cell area (not included in Peplink)…I decided to pony up for a used CEL-Fi Go x-32 which allows you to a) lock in your cellular provider and b) lock in and clean/optimize your cell signals digitally, also giving you a 100db gain…thereby cleaning up the signal input to Peplink,

I was advised by gemini Ai—to add a 10db signal attenuator before running the “indoor cable” directly into the Peplink router cell port A.

Do you know if there is any strong cellular signal limit to the imput cell port A of the Peplink B One 5G router . I wouldnt want to fry anything in Peplink.

I will be trying this setup in the spring when I am back to the camp.
