We are looking at using the POTS ATA to provide voice dialtone to a Schindler elevator. There is a TMobile tower less than a mile away. Wiring would be easy, as the elevator already has POTS pair going to the equipment room. Anyone on the forum done this? Also, thinking about VoLTE plans. This is a church so budget is a consideration. I understand Tello has $6/month SIM plans for voice, which would be perfect since it’s actually never used. Also, any experiences with local agencies? I see elevators are a suggested use, but don’t see if it passes ASME 17.x. Thanks.
POTS adaptors should not be used for dialing 911. As long as it dials somewhere else like an alarm company its fine. Keep it on a battery backup, and keep up its primecare license and setup alerts so if anything happens to it, you’ll know.
Thanks. Usually for elevators, it calls an elevator monitoring/service company. Who will talk to the individual stuck in the elevator, and if they cannot resolve, either get a technician to come or contact the fire department to open the door.
Hi Neal,
For the elevator use case there is a Auto-dial function. When enabled the POTS Adapter will call preconfigured number when goes off-hook. Though it could be helpful to know ![]()
Good to see some elevator functionality. Gives one a little more confidence that this unit actually has been tested with elevator phones. Maybe I should take a look at the manual for more details? We’re now running a Grandstream ATA, and there were a surprising number of things we had to diddle with to get it to work. Fortunately we had a retired Verizon engineer whose spoke Telephony. Our Schindler elevator phone has the phone number pre-loaded into the phone in the cab. Fun Fact: press the call button on a Schindler elevator, and the phone will NOT go back on hook until the agent on the monitoring service sends a specific DTMF code to it. Or you unplug it.
Hi Neal,
I do not think we have an function on POTS Adapter to go back on hook until the agent on the monitoring service sends a specific DTMF code to it. However, if that is something what needs to be supported, reach out to us ![]()
I think it’s more something the phone in the cab is supposed to do on hearing the code.
I guess it would be more interesting to hear what elevators the Peplink unit has been used in, or at least tested in, and if there are any setup recipes.
