Please explain meaning of the Ethernet port LED lights

What do the LED lights on the Ethernet port indicate on a Surf SOHO? No doubt there are two answers as the different hardware versions of the router support different speeds.

This is documented on page 30 of the Pepwave MAX and Surf User Manual from January 2016 for firmware 6.3 but the manual is obviously wrong. Specifically, it says a solid green LED light indicates a speed of either 10 or 100 and says nothing about speeds of 1000mbps. It also says nothing about what the Orange LED means when it is lit and solid.

Thanks for the heads up, we have updated the user manual.

On the Ethernet port:
When the green LED is on, there is 10/100/100Mbps traffic
When the orange LED is on, the port is being connected, but no data is being transferred
When the orange LED is blinking, data is being transferred
When the orange LED is off, no data is being transferred

So, its not possible to determine the Ethernet speed from looking at the lights? That is disappointing.

Could you clarify the difference between no data being transmuted when the orange LED is solid on and when its off. Does Orange off mean nothing is connected?

Let me refine my answer.

Hardware revision 1:
Green LED

  • On = Connected with 100Mbps
  • Off = Connected with 10Mbps

Orange LED

  • On = Port is being connected, but no data is being transferred
  • Off = Port is being disconnected
  • Blinking = Data is being transferred

Hardware revision 2:
Green LED

  • On = Connected with 1000Mbps
  • Off = Connected with 100/10Mbps

Orange LED

  • On = Port is being connected, but no data is being transferred
  • Off = Port is being disconnected
  • Blinking = Data is being transferred

The manuals, as of Jan 2017 and firmware v7.0, do not agree with the above. Either the manuals were never updated or fell back to their initial, frankly useless, state.

Specifically, I am referring to page 14 of the Surf SOHO manual

and pages 22, 23 and 26 of the Balance and MediaFast manual

Neither manual explains how to learn the port speed from the green and orange LEDs. And, this original question, from Jan 2016, ends at the 2nd edition of the Surf SOHO, so the same question applies to the latest MK3 edition of the Surf SOHO. How can we learn the port speed from the LED lights?
