Please can you explain what is exactly the benefits of the Peplink’s SmartCheck
algorithm?

SmartCheck: Available in Cellular/USB WAN, SmartCheck initiates when outbound traffic goes unresponded for 10 seconds. When SmartCheck initiates, it will run an ICMP health check.
The SmartCheck algorithm is specifically for Cellular connections and was added to reduce cellular data usage.

As for now it’s hard coded ping to google.com

So it will break if there is a DNS issue that might have nothing to do with the cellular ISP. Have you thought it might be better to ping 4.4.4.4 ?

Make sure DNS server is reliable then you should have no problem on this. 
Pinging single IP is more risky compare to a domain. Make sure WAN DNS server IP is set to a reliable servers then everything should be fine.
