Peplink Balance 580 with Verizon DSL

I have a Peplink Balance 580 HW1 running firmware 6.3.4 build 3613. Connected are two Comcast cable modems, a Windtream DSL modem, and a Verizon DSL Modem. All work except the Verizon service. In WAN4, I have tried the latest Actiontech modem including DLINK, and Westell models with no sucess. The WAN4 port of the 580 is configured with a static IP assigned by Verizon, and the DSL modem is in bridge mode. The LAN address assigned to the modem is a completely different subnet class as the other modems, so there is no conflict. The Verizon DSL modem works fine when plugged directly into a PC or with another router or Sonicwall Firewall directly configured with the static IP. For some odd reason, the Verizon service will not work when plugged into the Balance 580. When I plug the DSL modem in, it initializes on WAN4, turns green, and goes red after about 10 seconds with the message “WAN failed DNS test.” I have configured Google public DNS servers, I have tried to setup to ping the WAN’s gateway/dns, as well as http tests alternatively. Nothing seems to work. The DSL modem is connected, but no throughput between the 580 and the modem. If I run the ping utility within the 580, it times out when pinging external addresses, even if I ping the DSL modem’s gateway. It seems like these Balance 580’s just do not like Verizon DSL service whatsoever. Any suggestions? I read through every thread on this site, and they all conclude by recommending to call support. This seems to be a problematic issue for many, and the resolve should be no secret. Please help!

Possibly a port negotiation issue? You can view interface statistics and lock down the port speed/duplex settings from the support.cgi page.

After logging into the Balance, type in this URL to get to the support.cgi page:

Hi Ron:

Thank you for the reply. I did as you suggested and WAN4 shows “100Mb/s Duplex:Full” for the connectivity speed. I have tried to slow this down to 10Mbps, but did not make any difference. It is something about the Verizon service with this device. I opened a ticket with Verizon, and they see nothing wrong on the service and modem. Connectivity/throughput works fine with any device but the 580. Any other ideas?

Is the Windstream DSL modem also in bridged mode? If so, is this a PPPoE connection? When a DSL modem is configured as bridge mode it terminates to the Balance WAN using PPPoE. You mentioned the Verizon modem is configured this way but it works when configured as a static IP. Is the IP address public or private?

You may want to open a support ticket with us here to investigate further.

Yes, the Windtstream DSL modem is in bridge mode and works fine. I had a spare modem, the same used for the Windstream connection, and connected it to the Verizon network. No luck with throughput or DNS queries.

Is it possible to use an external USB ethernet adapter and connect that from the 580 to the DSL modem? If so, which USB ethernet adapters are compatible with the 580?

Peplink only provides support for USB Modems in the USB Port.

Maybe check with the Verizon DSL device to see if it has logged any errors.

If you make an outbound firewall rule to force one device to use WAN4, from that device
http://192.168.100.1
may get you access the LAN side of the Verizon DSL device from where you can find its log or logs.

A few things I would try. First, put a network switch between the Balance and the modem. Second I would physically remove and clear the configuration of all the other WAN ports. I know you said there is no conflict but that seems a likely problem. I realize that could create a mess with your router setup if you have a lot of rules so make a configuration backup first so you don’t have to rebuild it manually. After clearing the other WAN port setups, also try using a different WAN port.
