Hi - Doing a lot of waffling.
I currently have a Surf Soho for home use, which apparently is EOL with 8.3 FW. Only WAN/Ethernet is USB tethered Calyx hotspot, which is 4G LTE and maxes out at about 50/5 (and more typically 20/2-3). Generally only supports 2-3 laptops simultaneously (WFH) and usually one or two video streams (not a hardcore gamer or anything). Have used the Open VPN license for a Proton VPN, but speed caps out at 7-8 Mbps (assuming a horsepower issue).
Considering picking a NOS B30 Pro (hoping for $250) which seems to offer same functionality (and may be overkill for my situation), but if 9.0 FW supports wireguard, and - if I ever get off LTE or T-Mobil decides to seriously upgrade the tower nearest me - the extra 300 MB throughput might be a nice to have. Also - if the Calyx SIM is supported by the B30 PRO without issue (heard differing reports about it being plug and play), might get better LTE performance (as I’m mostly on 4G/B12 LTE anyway, and 5G/B71 is pretty spotty where I am).
Additionally, the Surf Soho is 3 years old now, and occasionally seems to drop unexpectedly (not sure if that’s a network issue or a getting old issue).
Am I losing anything by giving up the Surf Soho (WiFi as WAN, without the extra subscription)? Functionality seems to be about the same otherwise, and the B30 PRO seems to offer more throughput if Internet speeds ever improve.
Or would I be best off just waiting to see what the next SOHO offering is (expecting the price will be around 250-300).
Sorry - deciding whether or not to talk myself into (or out of) the purchase!
Thanks.
Geo.
