First time trying to use OpenVPN with no doc for help.
Balance 20x fw 8.3.0
After installing the license manually and rebooting a new WAN shows up: OpenVPN WAN 1
I configure it and enable it but nothing works.
The OpenVPN WAN remains disabled. It complains that a license is required and there is no IP address.
It seems impossible to debug.
I see no OpenVPN connection log? Is there one?
I see no messages at all from the router, other than a single line in the Event Log:
WAN: OpenVPN WAN 1 changes applied
After some fiddling, I now see this in the Event Log:
WAN: OpenVPN WAN 1 (Priority 1) disconnected (License Required)
I tried .ovpn files from both Mullvad and IVPN. Neither vendor has instructions for Peplink.
If there was a problem ingesting the .ovpn file would this be externalized anywhere?
At a loss.
Update: I tried a third VPN Provider, Windscribe. Same thing, the WAN is still disabled because a License is needed. Clearly not a VPN config issue.
I had a similar case with a 20x before and it got resolved by connecting once to InControl2, once it had synced its licenses with it, everything worked fine. I never had to reconnect it to IC2. You can enable reporting mode only (read only) when enabling IC2.
Hope this solves your problem too.
Thanks for this. I first tried updating fw from 8.3 to 8.4.1 but that failed. No message in the event log. It also removed (not just disabled) my OpenVPN WAN definition.
Then, I tried a second time to upgrade the firmware and that worked.
It also restored the OpenVPN WAN so no need to talk to InControl2.
It also activated the OpenVPN WAN, so yippee
Now to figure out which devices use the VPN and which do not. I have no outbound policies yet. An Ethernet connected pc used the VPN, a Wifi connected one did not. Nothing is easy.
Especially when there is no documentation. It would have been so easy to tell me that 8.4 was required. But, no.
Two of the three VPN providers asked about the software version of OpenVPN when generating their .ovpn files. Anyone know which version Peplink is using???
