Networking General knowledge/ Business Network Hardening

Hi,
I was a programmer for years and am starting a new business which is not tech related. Networking and design is pretty new to me. My friend was recommended a Peplink router(BR 1) for his business and I watched how it was setup and performing. Pretty impressive so far.
I would like to get a Peplink for my business where we will have a POS system and will be taking credit cards. Iwould like to become PCI DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard) compliant for security and marketing purposes.

  1. What resources do you recommend where I can start learning the ins and outs of networking and designing for my business. Many of the topic discussed here are over my head at the moment but want to get up to speed. This is will be a new hobby.
  2. How can I maximize the security features of the Peplink router to harden the infrastructure. Any recommendations?

Thanks!!
Gilson

Hi, Gilson…

Welcome…

Start point is the Peplink youtube channel.

For the Peplink Certification program, you can read about at this link.

Okay?

Marcelo,
I’ll start there. Thanks!
Gilson

I recommend to all people who are new to and want to learn networking to go through a CCNA bootcamp. Some people think that it’s Cisco-specific, and it kind of is, but it really starts from the basics (OSI model, subnetting, routing protocols, switching, etc.). More importantly, you learn a product set that is often copied wrt command sets.

You don’t actually need to get the certification (though, you should), but what you learn there will give you a great foundation.

Lastly, if you are in a selling position, it’s an amazing superpower to sit in front of a group of senior engineers with a client and “translate” from Peplink to Cisco speak (i.e., policy-based routing vs outbound policy).
