Nearby devices list helped expose improperly configured neighbor AP

Is the purpose for nearby devices purely for checking channel overlap when setting up your own channels on your router? Possibly also checking whether someone is trying to impersonate your network to conduct MITM attacks?

I was checking this morning and noticed someone was using their email address as their SSID!

Turns out i knew who it was so gave him a call. Older couple who don’t know alot about computers and much less about routers and security.

Local ISP just installed new equipment at his house last week. I suspect the technician had no idea what he was doing and used the email as the SSID.

I will be paying him a visit later to assess his installation and secure it as much as possible.

If anything, nearby devices has possibly helped out an older couple from being hacked!
