Migrate from Surf Mk3 to B One

Hi,

Due to the turning off of the ADSL network in the UK I will need to upgrade to Full fibre broadband which means the MK3 wont be able to cope with the additional speed.

Is it possible to migrate easily from the Surf MK3 to the B One as I dont want to go through and set up all the vlan’s and firewall rules from scratch?

Thanks

To my knowledge there’s no official migration path. I spent a few hours re-entering all of my Soho MK3 settings into the B One. I’d be lying if I said it was fun, although I’m glad I inspected each page because there were some new settings that aren’t available on the Soho.

There’s a vendor here in the US who says that if you buy from them, they’ll migrate your config for you. I’m not sure if the forum rules allow me to post details.

Thanks for the reply, manually configuring things sounds painful.

I am thinking I may not actually need to upgrade as the maximum download speed is 900mb and I think the Surf MK3 can handle up to 1000mb, unless I have got confused.

I dont need many features on a router, just separate vlans, firewall rule blocking and frequent firmware security updates which is why I have been happy with the surf so the B one would probably be an wasted and costly upgrade.

Yes, you may a bit confused vis-a-vis throughput. The SOHO is rated at 120mb/sec and the B-One is 1gb, roughly five times faster.

Personally? I think an upgrade from SOHO to B-One is a “no brainer” if for no other reason (and there are other reasons) that firmware development continues with the newer product.

Hi,

I am sure I am getting confused, so if I got full fibre with a download speed of 900mb I could only get a maximum of 120mb on any port?

I agree about the firmware support but the B-One seems to be £700 in the UK, which is vastly out of my price range

Is that with VAT and delivery? What is your price range? And what functionality do you need actually?

Looks as though that was for the 5G version which I dont need.
I can get the other version for £324 which is more reasonable.

I only really need separate vlans, firewall rule blocking and frequent firmware security updates as this is a home network and my focus is security and support if needed, which Peplink have more than fulfilled for me over the years.

You could only get ~120mb/sec on download speeds from the Internet.

The Surf SOHO MK3 supports gigabit speeds between LAN ports on the device, so if you have two computers in your home network they can communicate at 1Gbps. But the 120mb/sec spec refers to data coming through from the WAN port.

On the next two Mondays, InControl 2.13.2 will be released to Mars and Earth respectively. It will support applying a configuration not only to another device in the same group but also to another device model. Initially, any models that have no FlexModule slots will be supported. Applying a config from a Surf MK3 to B One will supported.

We will be adding support for more models later.

Thank you for explaining this for me @A_Mandel

@Michael That sounds great news and would make going from the Surf to the B One much easier for me.

I am not familiar with InControl as highlighted previously I only use a small amount of the Surf functionality and am not that familiar with a lot of the terminology, is inControl run locally on my network or does it mean my config etc is uploaded elsewhere?

It is a cloud-based device management system. Click HERE for more information.

After adding your Surf MK3 and B One to the same group of your InControl organization, if they’re connected to the Internet and under warranty, they should appear online in the system.

On Monday, you may navigate to the Surf MK3’s device overview screen, click “Show all”, and scroll down to “Configuration Backups”. You will find a history of the device’s configuration. You can apply any one of the configurations to the B One. The B One will be imported with the version of the Surf MK3’s configuration.

Thanks for confirming, as my Surf is out of warranty but the B One would be in warranty could I still use this?

If the Surf MK3 has never been online on InControl, no configuration will be backed up to the system. So you cannot choose a configuration to send to the B One. Sorry.

Ok fair enough, it will be a manual config for me then but I am sure it will help others.
