Issues with Firmware Update Affecting IP Address Configuration

Hi everyone,
I recently updated the firmware on my network device, but now I’m having trouble with IP address configuration. After the update, the device is not retaining the IP address settings and is showing connectivity issues. I’ve double-checked the settings and tried rebooting the device, but the problem remains same. This is the issue iam facing .Did anyone faced this kind of issue previously .GIve me guidence to solve my question. Thank you.

@sofiasovel do you mind sharing more details about your issue? Which device/model and firmware that you are encountering the reported symptoms?

Or, you may submit a ticket here for our team to further look into the issue.

I have a Balance One Core that I tried updating to 8.5.0.
I began having having an issue with some iot devices on a VLAN that appear to be connected, but do not respond to commands. I had to roll back to firmware 8.4.1 until I have more time to dianose the problem. All is good on 8.4.1.
Another interesting thing to note is that after the firmware update issues arose I first tried to download my previous configuration and I got a warning that (HA) high availability was not in that configuration. I never turned that feature on. Did 8.5.0 turn it on?

What iot devices? What make/model, does it connect on wifi 2.4ghz , 5ghz or ethernet?

Smart plugs with Espressif 2.4ghz wifi modules. I’m using Omada EAP225s for my APs. Some work and some don’t. Never had a problem until I updated to 8.5.0. They work fine after rolling back to 8.4.1.
I hope to diagnose further in the next few weeks.

I had a similar issue on an older firmware: I enabled 802.11r (fast transition) and some very old devices could no longer connect.

I believe firmware 8.5 added 802.11k and 802.11v support. Possibly related?

I forgot to mention that the IOT devices were installed and are controlled by the Smart Life - Smart Living app found on my Apple and Android phones. This is where I see them as offline and I am not able to control them. The app is also linked to “works with” Google home automation and that of course fails when speaking commands.
Could the firewall on the new firmware have been changed to block some access to the Smart Life site?
If so then why are others working?
Maybe Soylentgreen is on to something? “I believe firmware 8.5 added 802.11k and 802.11v support. Possibly related?”
I have never seen the option for 802.11r (fast transition)
But shouldn’t there be backwards compatability?

I had a little time to trouble shoot out why some IOT devices were not working.
They are connected to my router just fine through my Omada wireless network.
All the APs, POE switch and Controller have the latest firmware.
Several devices were not controllable and were shown offline the first time I upgraded to 8.5.0. Downgrading to 8.4.1 resolved the issue. On the second attempt on firmware 8.5.0 only one device failed to work. Downgrading again also solved the issue. On the third try every device is now controllable. I usually have around 65 devices connected to the router. Most of them have reservations so I can keep track of everything.
Does anyone have any ideas on what could be happening with this firmware upgrade?
Thanks, Dave

I wish I knew. We upgraded a Balance 310X to 5.0.0 and had the same issue. Four IoT devices (light switches, a Schlage lock and a Ting sensor) went out to lunch and had to be manually reacquainted with the Peplink APs.

@Rick-DC and @Daking ,

Do you have a ticket created ? It’s would be good for us to check from the device to analyze the communication between those devices.

I did not create a ticket as I was contributing to the post by Sofiasovel. It’s a strange connectivity issue between the Smart Life APP via the web server and back to the IOT devices. All indications are that the IOT devices are connected fine to the router. After the third upgrade attempt to 8.5.0 all devices are now working fine. This firmware bug could cause other strange connection problems and I thought that everyone should be aware that the issue is in version 8.5.0 and not their network hardware.

No. We upgraded two B310Xs (both HW3) from 8.4.1 to 8.5.0. One went perfrectly, as expected. The other had the wi-fi issues described. The owner wanted the issue fixed right away – so that was our priority. All OK now – but we have no idea what the issue was.

“Side note”: We have found the Smart Life “app” to be rather flaky. It was much better (and reliable) before its authors started adding “features” to it.

I’m having something similar (?) described here: Firmware 8.5 and VLAN/Firewall with IOT devices

That’s interesting as I have never had any issues with the Smart Life APP before 8.5.0
I do agree that some of the features are worthless though.
My latest issue is that WAN 1 is failing the Health Check frequently at around 8:44am Phoenix time. The router will conect to the mobile WAN and then reconnect to WAN 1 about 8 seconds later. I tried extending the DNS from 5 seconds to 10 seconds, but that didn’t work. I was using just cloudflare DNS, but I have now added 8.8.8.8 to see if that resolves the issue.

Hello all, this is an update to the firmware issues.
I added Google to the DNS Health Check, but that did not resolve the issue.
I also tried rebooting the router with no luck.
After the reboot I lost communications from my Smart Life APP to 4 of my IOT devices.
I went back to firmware 8.4.1 and that resolved both issues.
There must still be some bugs in 8.5.0

@Daking, if you don’t mind, we would like to investigate the reported symptom via the ticket, and then we can share the findings here after identifying the root cause. Do you think you can help us by submitting a ticket to follow up on the case as suggested by @sitloongs?

I’ve diagnosed at least one cause of this, which appears to be a change in behavior (or a bug?) in the interaction of VLAN + Outbound Policy + Firewall Rules Outbound Policy + Firewall + VLAN bug in firmware 8.5 - #2 by soylentgreen

Hi soylentgreen, I appreciate your input and confirming that there is an issue (bug) in 8.5.0 with IOT devices on a VLAN no longer responding to commands. I don’t have any special Outbound Policy Firewall settings on this VLAN, but I do have these VLAN devices isolated from each other on the WIFI network APs. I have never had a problem with the previous Firmware versions using my WIFI configuration. I always keep my IOT devices isolated. I sure hope there are no data leaks in 8.5.0.
I hope someone is continuing to investigate as I don’t have the time right now to troubleshoot the problem.
Dave
