Dear Development Team,
I have just been round the loop of raising a ticket with Peplink Support on the topic of the unhelpful implementation of being able to use a Wi-Fi Client’s associated SSID to create a custom outbound routing rule. This was in conjunction with my new installation of a Max BR2 Pro with 4 x AP One AX Lite external APs.
I am running F/W 8.3.0 on the Max BR2 Pro router and 3.9.2 on the AP One AX Lite’s.
For some reason the developer(s) of this aspect of the firmware seems to have simply added a tiny Help Screen stating that this rule will only work if a Wi-Fi Client flukes onto the router internal AP itself and has not roamed onto one of the network’s Peplink external APs? This is clearly in conflict with adding external Peplink APs to improve coverage as is required in implementations such as mine on a large boat where a single AP is completely inadequate.
Having developed software myself, I can not fully understand the problem as the router clearly has knowledge of which SSID EVERY Wi-Fi client is connected to, due to being able to display this data on the Wi-Fi Clients page under the AP tab. To have the option of an Outbound Rule that does not fully work when Peplink APs are connected on the network, is in my view unreasonable and leads to frustration, wasted diagnostics and trouble tickets being opened.
However, this option (if properly implemented) is extremely useful (presumably why it was added in the first place). in my case I want to optionally route traffic across a Peplink VPN determined by which SSID a user opts to connect to. The use of a VLAN to tag traffic from a particular SSID might be an option, but there does not not appear to be a corresponding option of “VLAN” for the Source field on a Custom Outbound Rule?
The popup Help Screen on the Custom Outbound Policy page against “Source” currently says:
"Client’s Associated SSID:
Any outgoing traffic coming from clients
connected to the selected SSID on the
integrated AP will match this rule.
Traffic coming from the SSID on
external AP’s is not included"
Can I respectfully ask for a review of the current functionality to determine if it can be made to work with external Peplink APs present in a network, especially in light of my observation that the router (performing the routing) clearly appears to have knowledge of the Wi-Fi Client’s associated SSID and IP Address?
My Peplink Trouble Ticket number on the topic is: 23060138
Kind Regards,
Adrian Hobbins
