IP Settings with public IP address

Hi,

sorry if this is a dumb question. But we have a task, where we get a public IP adress in a company to access the internet. That means that we get a network port that is outside their company network and has a public IP address.

If I connect this to our Peplink router, what should I set in the IP settings? All that I get is the public IP address - no gateway, no netmask no DNS server. I know that I can use 8.8.8.8 as DNS or any other public DNS server but what about the other settings?

Thanks and cheers

Robert

No such thing as a dumb question Robert.

If they give you an IP to manually assign they need to give you a subnet and gateway IP too. If they haven’t ask them.

Did they give you the public IP in CIDR notation maybe? if it is a /30 eg x.x.x.1/30 then the gateway would be the other IP in that allocated range (x.x.x.2 in this case) and the subnet is 255.255.255.252

Thank you Martin,

I’m trying to solve this confusion with the IT department. I don’t think that we’re supposed to build a BGP routing. That would be some kind of overkill for a simple conference where we need the Peplink. I was confused because the IT guy said that I don’t need a gateway because I’m outside of their network. But in that case the Peplink would be an AS router and we would need to setup BGP routing right?

That is total overkill and not the way to go. I’ll try to solve this misunderstanding with the IT guy.

Thanks and cheers

Robert
