Importing Firewall Rules from Config file doesn't import Content Blocking Customized Domains ?

Greetings,

Newbie here.

I bought the (now discontinued) SURF SOHO MK3 about a month ago and have been setting it up and generally becoming familiar with it and with InControl 2.

I initially created some Firewall Rules and Content Blocking Customized Domains using the SURF SOHO web-based configuration tool and saved multiple copies of the SURF SOHO’s configuration as I slowly configured things over several days. Afterward as I started using InControl 2, I managed to import my Firewall Rules into InControl2’s Firewall Rules from one of my previously saved configuration files that I’d downloaded from the SURF SOHO.

However, yesterday I noticed that the Customized Domains that I’d previously entered under the Content Blocking tab in the SURF SOHO had for some reason, disappeared from the SURF SOHO web-based management tool’s Firewall Rules > Content Blocking menu. It was at this point that I also noticed that the Customized Domains were also missing from under the Content Blocking tab in InControl2.

(Side Note: Prior to my fully setting up my InControl2 profile, my SURF SOHO had been subjected to a couple of firmware patches and/or configuration changes. The changes had wiped out my wifi AP settings, which I had to re-enter. Whether these patches changed anything related to my Firewall Rules, is unclear. I don’t think so, but I have no other explanation as to why my Content Blocking Customized Domains disappeared).

I thought that I could perhaps import the Customized Domains into InControl2’s Content Blocking tab from one of my configuration files that I’d previously saved from the SURF SOHO, but this doesn’t appear to be possible - there doesn’t appear to be any menu/button in InControl2’s under Content Blocking tab for importing the Content Blocking data into InControl2.

I then thought that perhaps the Content Blocking data including the Customized Domains, might get imported into InControl2 along with the other Firewall Rules when importing the Firewall Rules from a configuration file, but this doesn’t appear to be the case. I tried using InControl2’s “Import Rule Set from Configuration File” function to try to import a new set of Firewall Rules and Content Blocking data from an existing configuration file (without actually saving the data - I just wanted to examine whatever data purportedly got imported by viewing the pop-up InControl2 imported Firewall Rules window). But when I examined InControl2’s Content Blocking tab (in the unsaved pop-up Firewall Rules window) after importing the config file, all the data entry windows including Customized Domains in InControl2 were empty.

I tried repeating the Firewall Rules importation from other SURF SOHO configuration files that I had saved on different days/times, going back over the past couple of weeks+ covering the period where I was sure I had entered Customized Domains into the SURF SOHO using the web-based management tool, but each time the Content Blocking tab in InControl2 contained no data (including no Customized Domains). At this point, I was/am starting to suspect that downloading the configuration data directly from the SURF SOHO does not save the Firewall Rules Content Blocking data.

I then manually re-entered the Customized Domains into InControl2 under the Content Blocking tab saved the data. When I re-opened the InControl2 Firewall Rules window, I saw that the Customized Domains were listed under InControl2’s Firewall Rules > Content Blocking tab, and these Customized Domains also appeared in the SURF SOHO’s web-based configuration tool under the Advanced > Firewall Rules > Content Blocking menu.

However, as a further experiment, I saved a copy of InControl2’s configuration to my computer’s hard drive, and then I tried to import this same configuration file back into InControl2 using the “Import Rule Set from Configuration File” function. Again, I observed that InControl2’s Content Blocking tab was missing the list of Customized Domains.

At this point, can someone explain or confirm what data is saved to a configuration file that is downloaded directly from the SURF SOHO using the web-based management tool, and what data is saved to a configuration file that is downloaded from InControl2?

More specifically, does the Content Blocking data (including the Customized Domains) from the SURF SOHO and from InControl2 get saved as part of the configuration?

Shouldn’t the Content Blocking data get imported into InControl2 from a configuration file (whether the file was created by a download from the SURF SOHO or from a download from InControl2, and assuming the Content Blocking data was actually saved to the configuration file)?

Does saving the configuration from the SURF SOHO save everything that has been entered/configured, or are certain configuration parameters not saved to the configuration file (which in my opinion, would be dumb if true - what’s the point of having a configuration file that doesn’t save the entire router configuration)?

Please advise.

Regards,

Dave
