HA Behavior and Config Sync Questions – Balance 1350 (v8.5.2)

Hi everyone,

I have two Peplink Balance 1350 units running firmware 8.5.2, configured in HA with full configuration sync.
I’d appreciate your input regarding the following scenario:

The preferred master goes down.

The slave becomes the active master.

While the preferred master is offline, we disable configuration sync and make some changes (specifically adding SpeedFusion VPN tunnels) on the new active unit.

My questions:

  1. When the original master comes back online, which unit will become the active master?

  2. How can I make sure the current active unit (former slave) stays as master, even after the original preferred master is back, so the newly added configurations aren’t lost?

  3. If both units end up in “master” state, which one keeps the active role, and based on what logic or setting?

Also, I would like the original master, once back online, to automatically take the updated configuration from the current master and continue working with those settings as the new baseline.

Thanks in advance for your help!

On the HA configuration page you have the options “Preferred Role” and “Resume Master Role Upon Recovery”, which affect this.

So you have one as preferred master, one as preferred slave and if master fails, slave takes over. If “Resume Master Role Upon Recovery” is on, then when the master comes back up it will take over again. If its not set, the slave will stay as master.

Not actually sure on config sync, I would say you would have to have “Resume Master Role Upon Recovery” set to off to prevent the master overwriting your config changes on the slave.
