Fix for Comcast, TP-Link TC7650 CM, Surf SOHO MK3?

What was the fix to get the Surf SOHO to connect with TP-Link and similar cable modems? I’ve seen the issue discussed repeatedly but I’m not entirely clear on what to do to resolve it. Is it a firmware update I need to install?

I have used the TC-7610 and SOHO MK3 without connection issues to Comcast but you must call Comcast to get them to register your modem.
