Feature: Setting SIM/eSIM switching according to GEO location

Hello,
I would like to discuss the possibility of setting the use of individual SIM cards based on location.

We use MAX BR2 Pro devices on buses on regular international routes in Europe, and it would be very helpful if we could set a perimeter in the device within which Cellular would automatically switch to a specific SIM/eSIM and keep it connected. Unfortunately, the device currently disconnects when there is a slight loss of signal and tries the second SIM/eSIM within the country, which is not enabled for roaming, thus prolonging the time the device is without an internet connection.

It would therefore be very helpful if it were possible to set the SIM card and eSIM card to be active according to the GEO location.

Are you considering this feature?

Thank you for your help.

Hi Michael,

Interesting question. With the challenge of device going offline are you using both Modems on different priorities?

There is a way with GEO fencing to apply an IC2 Tag and with the recently added WAN Configuration options in IC2 you can make 2 different WAN profiles with both profiles different WAN priorities on a different Tag. Everytime the GEO Fencing switches the Tag and therefor switches the WAN Configuration.

Another option would be looking at SpeedFusion Technologies so you can hot-failover between SIM cards.

Let me know if you need some help setting this up.

Hello, @AstroJoe,
I tried to find out more information and I’m not sure if it’s possible to apply in our case. We use both physical SIM cards and eSIMs in our BR2 Pro, and the settings are a little different there. Furthermore, if I understand correctly, the state perimeters would have to be set separately for each device, and probably for each country as well. There would be many variants. But if you find the time and inclination to help me, I would of course be grateful.

Thank you

I would like to add something else. I tried to help ChatGPT discover this and reached the stage where I create profiles in WAN Configuration that can trigger a certain action after entering a given state. However, there is no option to say:

Based on the GPS location, the device has entered the territory of the Czech Republic, Cellular 1 automatically switches to slot SIM A/SIM B/BYO eSIM A/BYO eSIM B/Peplink eSIM, etc. And at the same time, turn off Health Check This is a feature that would completely change the experience for the better.

In our case, where we use two Cellular devices side by side in one country and travel through four countries, other connection quality checks are not very meaningful. We would simply like to have it permanently turned on and quickly switch to another eSIM/SIM slot at the border.

Is Peplink considering something like this?

Thank you

Hi Michael,

Apologies for the delayed answer I’m now back into an European inclination

So the cellular details are not possible as of now. I have unfortunately no information if there is something like this on the way. I agree with you that this would be usefull.

Your idea about the quality checks I’d not recommend disable smartcheck on the modems. This will not help with the uptime of your cellular modem.

What you could do is that you have both devices in overlapping GEO fencing so they will switch one by one. This to ensure you have at least one Modem online.

Another option is to check out GEO fencing with BULK configurator. This feature pushes the Config file based on tag. This might be the only work around until the cellular details are added to the WAN Configurator.
In this case the GEO fencing applies or removes a tag when the vehicle enters or leaves the GEO fencing area, this tag then gets triggers the BULK Config option and the new config file gets pushed. If you have 2 devices this could work.

Hope this helps.
