Fast roaming on Wifi WAN Balance 20X

Hi there,

Does WiFi as WAN support fast roaming on Balance 20X?

I’ve found a thread about MAXHD from 2014 and answer was no but maybe something changed.

Thank you in advance!

Ivan

Yes roaming is supported and settings can be tweaked:

This is on firmware 8.4.1. Also, keep in mind that if you get too aggressive it could negatively impact the performance of the Wi-Fi AP if you are using that as well.

Hi,

As per my knowledge, as of now, WiFi as WAN on the Balance 20X does not support fast roaming. The functionality remains similar to previous models such as the MAXHD.

Thanks
Oliva

Let’s let one of the nice folks at Peplink clarify this for us. While roaming is supported with Wi-Fi-as-WAN, I do not believe 802.11r (or 802.11k and v) has been implemented as it has for LAN (as an option) and therefore fast roaming cannot be achieved. (Indeed, my suspicion is that fast roaming would not be desirable for WAN when the same radio is used for LAN as well.) Perhaps @WeiMing could comment?

@olivasmith Balance 20X Wi-Fi WAN includes Fast Roaming (802.11r) in firmware 8.4.1.

When the [Roaming] option is enabled, the Wi-Fi WAN will be able to connect to 802.11r/k SSID(s).

thats good news. does this apply to all devices on 8.4.1?

does it also apply to lan-side wifi ap mode?

Yes, the Fast Roaming (802.11r) applies to models with Wi-Fi 5 & Wi-Fi 6 in firmware 8.4.1, on both Wi-Fi AP & Wi-Fi WAN.
