I recently got my Balance One and have updated to V8 FW yesterday. The unit is being used in a multi WAN SOHO environment and running through the Web Admin I see that Intrusion Detection & DOS is disabled by default.
Is this something that I should enable, and if so are there any disadvantages ?

You only need to turn it on if you have public facing IPs, most consumers have there modems/routers hidden behind the carriers NAT, so it is not necessary, having said that we enable this on all of our customer’s deployments anyway.
There are cases where if you are hosting services you may want this off, those are rare, and a professional network engineer will typically be the one to decide.
