Didn’t this forum start out originally as a Discourse forum? Or am I missing something.

You are correct.
Initially, we began with a Discourse forum, but later, we developed our own forum to explore additional customization options and improvements. Subsequently, upon considering the feedback from our community members, we have opted to revert to the Discourse forum for enhanced usability and improved site performance.
