connection priority based on data limits

I would like the ability to automatically change wan connection priority based on how much data was used on a sim.

Example, I have both a Verizon and a tmobile sim in a router with dual lte modems. My Verizon is priority 2 because it has the faster connection and 150 gig data limit. After the limit it’s reduced to 600k but still usable. T-Mobile is priority 3, a bit slower with less coverage, but has high speed for 50 gigs, then deprioritized for another 50, then about 200k data speed.

What I would like to do, is have the priority changed based on data usage instead of disconnecting the sim. A good set of rules would be once data limit is reached, move priority down by 2. this would work great if I set the connections as priority 1 and 2. once Verizon hits it’s data limit it’ll be moved to priority 3 and t-mobile would then be the primary wan. once t-mobile hits it’s data limit move it down 2 which would put it priority 4, making Verizon primary again since it has the faster speed once data is used up than t-mobile has. end of billing period, move the connection back to original priority

The reason for this is I’m a truck driver, and I go into area’s where one or the other may not have service. So I’d like it to continue to fall back to the second connection even if it’s over the data limit.

Thanks for the great feedback and for explaining your use case and need so well - this makes sense to me! I see engineering has added this to their roadmap and is looking at ways to implement it.

Hi Travis - did you hear back from engineering on this? I have a similar ask as I have a number of locations that need to fail over from one sim card to the secondary once it hits 300 GB of usage. Is that possible today? Is there a way to code that in?

if all you want to do is fall over to a sim, that’s already doable. my suggestion takes it a step further so the modem is aware of the data limits and rate limits and the fact that the sim will still connect when limit is reached. Basically it’ll take a sim that reaches it’s limit and drop it’s priority so it’ll swap to the next sim, but can still use the primary sim in bad connection area’s or when secondary runs out of data if it’s rate limit is lower than the primary once limits are reached.

if you just want to fall over to next sim without all that this is how you do it.

first, put your primary wireless network as a higher priority than your secondary if you have a model with dual LTE cards. or you can put both sims in the same modem, doesn’t matter. if they are in seperate ones, as I said put one higher priority than the other, handy for auto fallover. on your primary modem [or only modem] click details [or the connection name if you’re on the latest firmware just released] then scroll down to where it shows bandwidth allowance monitor and check the check box. rest is self explanatory, just tell it data limit [might take some guesswork as your carrier measures differently than modem], what day your data resets on, and check disconnect at 100%. if both sims are in the same modem be sure to tell it to use both sims, but prefer your primary sim. I also suggest telling it to swap back to your primary after so many minutes in case it swapped over due to a connectivity problem rather than data used up.

Thank you Brandon. I am going to use the same T-mobile cards that have 300 GB included before overages kick in so setting up two of them essentially gives me 600 GB without overages as long as it reads the data correctly and the setting details operate properly which a few years ago I didn’t seem to work. I will go and test this out and let you know if it is successful as it will save a lot of money.
