Can I transfer my current Verizon iPad sim?

Hello, I’m looking into getting a peoeave for my rv. I currently use an iPad tethered to a mini-router for my internet. I’m wanting a more robust solution as my iPad needs replaced (8yrs old).

Will my current plan/sim move directly into the pepwave? I’m not finding any real answers on if an iPad plan will work or if I need to change to a hotspot plan. I’m having good luck with data limits be unlimited using TTL assignment and I would like to keep that perk if possible.

thanks for any help!!!

Hi Casey. Good question. Generally, you will need a “data plan” which some folks refer to as a “hotspot Plan.” It would not hurt to try to use your existing SIM but my expectation would be that it would not work. I am not sure where you are located but I can say that all three of the major carriers in the USA have such plans on both a pre and post-paid basis. And there are also many resellers.

Here is the URL for devices certified for use on the Verizon network.
https://opendevelopment.verizonwireless.com/
I searched ‘ipad’ & ‘apple’. No results were returned. I’m a PC/Android person so I may have not used the correct terminology in the search.
With that said… I went to the Verizon web site (see URL below):

Verizon lists a variety of tablets for their networks, including IPads. On the surface, it would seem you could go into your Verizon account and upgrade your device only.
I have been using Verizon for years & have found if you can get to the 2nd level support people they can be very helpful.
Don’t iPads have phone & hotspot capability? Verizon can get ‘spooky’ when you attempt to use a phone plan in a ‘data only’ device (also referred to as IOT device).
Hope this helps a bit.
Good luck!

The iPad is considered a “connected device” similar to any tablet. It is not the same price/setup as a phone. It has unlimited data for the device and limited data for hotspot use. So the plan is similar to a phone but it is categorized a bit differently.

Just to pile on a bit: With Verizon (and other providers) it depends on the plan.

There are two variants of the question on connectivity:

  • what does the plan allow?
  • what can I get away with?

For the latter your mileage may vary, and you may lose access if the vendor tightens its policy enforcement.

If your plan is one of the earlier unlimited Verizon plans then transitioning the SIM card from the tablet to a peplink device is likely to work, and may even be allowable within the plan’s policy. You may have to call tech support to get it activated on the new device, in which case you want a level 2 support person, and the keyword is that you are moving the SIM card from one connected device to another.

In a broad sense Peplink devices work on Verizon’s network. Whether a particular device works on a particular plan is a Verizon policy question rather than one of equipment compatibility.

In the absence of specifics re. your plan and the Peplink device you want to move to it is difficult to be more precise.

Good luck,

Z
