BR1 Mini shows error after firmware upgrade: "Suspect "Cellular" cellular antenna component malfunction, please contact distributor for support."

Hello, I just upgraded a BR1 Mini (HW1) from firmware 7.0 to 8.3 (with a couple steps in between, since you can’t directly upgrade between these two versions).
The device is about 5 years old.

Now the device is showing the following message at the bottom of the main Dashboard page:

“Suspect “Cellular” cellular antenna component malfunction, please contact distributor for support.”

We’re using an external antenna (same one has been in use the entire time). We show 5 bars signal strength (Verizon) and cellular details report:

LTE Band 4 (AWS 1700/2100 MHz)
RSSI: -62dBm SINR: 12.0dB RSRP: -94dBm RSRQ: -9.0dB

Is this error an indication that the device is beginning to fail, or just a side effect of an older hardware version with new firmware?

We have also noticed poor connectivity from this device for the last few days (before the fw upgrade). That’s what prompted us to upgrade the firmware. It seems the device would stop transmitting traffic, then if we logged into the dashboard, it would start transmitting again.

Time to replace the device with a new one?

Thanks for any advice.

Hello rgriggs,

That message indicates possible connectivity issue with one of the peplinks cellular antennas. In short it means that “MAIN” or “AUX” antenna has very low or non existing signal. So in your situation it would mean that your device currently works using only one of its antennas.

Issue could happen because of lose antenna (or not fully connected). I would suggest to detach / re-attach both antennas then reboot the device and check if the message disappears (reboot is required for message to disappear in case if antenna connectivity is fixed).

If you only have a single antenna connected to Main and don’t also use a second antenna on the Aux/Diversity, then it will give you this warning. If you’re happy not using diversity just ignore the message.

Probably worth doing a full reset to factory default config and re-configuring it from scratch. It’s possible that coming from such an early firmware something went wrong transposing your config for the newer firmware during the upgrade process.

Also check in the support.cgi page if your modem module firmware is way behind current version and consider upgrading, (understanding the (minimal) risks involved first).
