basic question about DHCP Reservation

I have a Balance One router running firmware version 8.2.1. It has DHCP Server enabled on both the default Untagged LAN and the Guest VLAN. The default Untagged LAN is in the 10.20.30.x subnet with an IP range of 101-149. The Guest VLAN is in the 10.40.50.x subnet with an IP range of 151-199. I would like to add a device to the Untagged LAN and another different device to the Guest VLAN. I would like to assign unchanging fixed IP addresses to both devices. I would like to use DHCP Reservation to assign the two fixed IP addresses. My question is as follows. Should the assigned fixed IP addresses be taken from inside of the 101-149 and 151-199 ranges? Or, should they be taken from outside of the 101-149 and 151-199 ranges? Or, does it not matter? The user manual is silent on this issue.

Well, you have two options.

  1. Static addresses: Assign each device a static address out of DHCP range. You would do this from the client itself, not the router.
  2. DHCP with reservation. Let the new device receive an address via DHCP. Then, from Status β†’ Client List hit the little β€œtag” icon (do a mouse-over – a tool tip will pop up). That will add that MAC address to the reserved address list and each time that device connects it will receive the same address.

Either approach will work – depends on what you wish to achieve.

Hi Rick-DC. Thank you for your informative reply. I prefer your second option of using the Client List along with DHCP Reservation. This option should ensure that the assigned fixed IP addresses come from inside the 101-149 and 151-199 IP address ranges.
