Off-premise ATMs (automated teller machines) offer customers the speed and convenience to withdraw their money locally instead of travelling across town to get to the bank.
These off-premise ATMs can typically be found inside shopping malls, hospitals and even convenience stores where traffic is high. The challenge with deploying them is typically the initial capital required and typically the more remote the location, the higher the recurring network connectivity cost is going to be. It isn’t uncommon for ATMs to connect via expensive VSAT because fixed landline connectivity is not an option.
Enter Peplink’s M2M (machine to machine) capable MAX routers. By leveraging cellular connectivity, the MAX routers eliminates the obstacle that prevents ATMs from deploying in areas where landline connections are unfeasible. Maintaining connectivity to the interbank or ATM network is also crucial where available, a second connection such as DSL plugged into the router would provide vital connection resilience should one connection go down. InControl 2 completes the picture and provides centralized remote monitoring for the entire fleet, dramatically reducing the need for site visits.
A group of banks based in Myanmar have had great success with the Peplink solution. Kanbawza, Ayeyarwady, Innwa, Construction and Housing Development Bank, Asia Green Development Bank, and Yoma have over 700 MAX BR1s deployed in their ATMs.
The most common deployment is with a MAX BR1 that the ATM and a CCTV is connected to. Inside the BR1 would be a SIM card for 3G (or 4G LTE) cellular connection, and a second SIM card for network redundancy. Where available, DSL or a VSAT would act as connection resilience, taking over should cellular networks become unreachable. Security is always important for ATMs, so all deployments have either a SpeedFusion or PepVPN encrypted connection terminating at an enterprise grade Peplink Balance device at the bank’s headquarters.
Peplink-equipped ATMs are far more flexible when it comes time for deployment. Off-premise ATMs are no longer limited by connection availability and can deploy in locations previously deemed impossible. And because it is no longer necessary to rely on landline connections, there’s no waiting for expensive cables to be laid – deployment is instant and costs are kept well under control.
