Balance 20x and Starlink Issue

Well, I don’t seem to be getting resolution with support and I can’t be the only human trying to do this.

We are full-time RVers and earlier this year, we bought a Balance 20X. For providers, we use Starlink as our WAN and also have an ATT unlimited data plan, using a SIM card installed in the Balance. Our Starlink service is based in Mexico, not the US. Which means our IP address is assigned out of Mexico City, Mexico. So when in the US, we get served ads in Spanish and all of our streaming services see us as being in Mexico. We have tried using VPN configurations but it slowed download speed so dramatically that it wasn’t an option.

So I set up two SSIDs and did bonding of the two services, connecting one of the SSIDs with SpeedFusionConnect.

It was my understanding that creating the SFC tunnel would basically do the same as VPN because the traffic will get sent through Peplinks servers, closest to where we are physically located.

That doesn’t seem to be the case. No matter what, we are still getting ads in Spanish and our streaming services won’t show us US content.

Any suggestions?

What city did you put as your SFC tunnel?
What do your active sessions show your connections as going out?
Maybe some things are still going out the starlink instead of your tunnel?
Can you try to update your address on your starlink to a us address?

Hi @artaughey , welcome to the forum.

When connected to the SSID that then feeds on the SFC link, please check this website
https://whatismyipaddress.com/
and in the My IP Information, it well tell you where your IP location really is.

Note the SFC you can setup to multiple locations (3 max), and force it to those as well, and I find that more reliable than letting peplink choose for you.

A side note, on Starlink roaming plan, their official line is that you can only use it up to 2 months outside the home region, meaning every 2 months you need to take the physical dish back to mexico. This is an ITU ruling not a Starlink thing (although how Starlink applies the ruling is another thing…)

Thanks! I do have SFC set to Automatic but we are still getting the Mexico City IP. I was playing around with setting LA as out closest server but my wife was working and I didn’t want to screw things up for her. :slight_smile:

Our roaming is North America and we haven’t had an issue as of yet with the 2 month rule. We head back into Mexico in January.

Hi Jonathan, no, Starlink won’t let you change your address on the plan. Unfortunately! I’m going to try and manually set the server in the SFC.

Have you set to route your traffic through the SFC? (Which SFC hub location are you currently connected to?).

I’m thinking you are probably still going via the Starlink route, and not the SFC…

Hi Tim!

Working with support, we manually selected 3 west coast servers. But that didn’t help. The Mexico IP still is detected and now streaming services are detecting that we have a VPN (because of SFC) so that created another issue.

It’s just frustrating because it seems like it shouldn’t be this hard. People are working all over the world, masking their IPs. :man_shrugging:

As @tgorter mentioned, what are your outbound policy settings for the traffic? This will determine where your traffic/connection appears and what you get for your location.

Hello @artaughey ,

If you have made no further configuration (especially in the outbound policies), all your traffic will simply be flowing through the Starlink or Cellular. As these are in your priority 1.

Now to use the SFC you will need to create/adjust your outbound poilicy in the Advanced>Outbound policy page

Create yourself a new rule
call it what you want, if you want to do all traffic, set it to origin:any dest:any
choose algorythm:enforced and select your WAN in the bottom drop down.

that said, if the SFC fails, all your traffic will be blocked, so maybe you want to do algorythm:priority and select in order of priority which ones you want to use.

Here you can also go routing traffic onto specific VLANs, if you want to seperate particular traffic depending on which LAN port you use, or on client type, or for a specific SSID if your WiFi is on the peplink network…
What I’m saying, it can get complicated, so do take care what you do. but the above should get you going.

Thanks Tim! I think we may have it worked out. I reached out to West Networks and their support made some tweaks and it 10 minutes done. Now why couldn’t Peplink support do that?

I’ll look at the outbound policy again. Apparently I need to deep dive into that more!

And to answer your question, in effect you did get Peplink support. West Networks is a major Peplink reseller (and actually a power house in the support arena). Here on the forum you have many of the resellers helping out (me included).
The thing is, the reseller that sold you the unit in the 1st place should have given that support as well!

In any case, the culture here is to help where we can, even when you weren’t a direct customer!
