I have a RV with a Max Transit Duo that I would like to connect to when parked at home and currently have it working (almost).
It is setup with WiFi as Wan and connects into my home network/internet without any problems. However I want to be able to access the RV’s network from the home network so I’ve have setup a static route with the Max Transit Wan interface as next hop and the target range as 192.168.50.0/24 (the lan interface is 192.168.50.253).
From the home network I can ping the lan interface on the Max Transit but nothing else on that network ( traceroute times out beyond the interface). The firewall on the Max Transit is default which is “Allow All” for in and outbound traffic. At this point I’m at a loss as to why I can’t see anything beyond the network interface on the Max Transit.
If anyone has any thoughts I’d really appreciate the input.
The RV has a Peplink Max Transit Duo which the above devices connect to.
What is the firmware version of the Peplink?
How are the devices connected (direct to Peplink ethernet port, through a switch, etc)?
Can you send screenshots of your LAN configuration on the Peplink?
You have a home network, with wi-fi.
What type of router?
Can you send screenshots detailing LAN Configuration
The Peplink is using your home wi-fi as it’s WAN.
What is the WAN IP given to the Peplink?
Can you send screenshots of WAN details on the Peplink side?
Can you send a screenshot of any static routes you have configured
Please correct anything that is wrong in the statements I made, and answer the questions under them, and I will try to provide advice if I can. I suspect there is something going on with VLANs or routing.
There are about 10 devices mostly IoT devices and no servers
MTD Firmware: 8.2.1 build 5372
There are no devices connected to the ethernet port. All devices are dhcp via wlan
Peplink network has no vlans and the network interface is 192.168.50.253. All devices are on the 192.168.50.0/24 subnet
Max is connected to home network via Wifi as WAN with WAN interface address of 192.168.5.106
Max can ping/traceroute any device on the home network so didn’t setup a static route
Max Firewall is disabled in and out (Allow All)
Set to allow ICMP
Home Network
Router is a Firewalla Gold
Network is flat with a 192.168.5.0/24 subnet
Static route is setup on router with a destination range of 192.168.50.0/24 and gateway/next hop of 192.168.5.106. I confirmed in the router cli that the static route shows up.
From the home network I can ping the Max network interface 192.168.50.253 but not any of the wlan devices
Traceroute gets to the Max WAN interface but times out after that
Let me know if there is anything else I can provide and thanks for your help!
This is a very thorough reply, and it is much appreciated. There are many times in my life that I WISH someone would give me even half as many details as you just did, while troubleshooting. Kudos to you!
Unfortunately, off the top of my head I don’t have a solid answer for you. From what I can tell everything (or at least the obvious things) look correct.
This is a situation where I would need to sit down with some equipment and do testing. If I get time at home the next couple days I will see if I can lab up a similar scenario and provide any further insight.
My gut (which is often wrong, hence why I like to be hands on ) is telling me that the perhaps the problem lies with static routes on the Peplink side. Like traffic from the the 192.168.5 network gets to the Peplink and then doesn’t know where to go and/or doesn’t now how to respond back. Maybe if you get a chance to play around try setting up some routes on that side and see how that effects the setup.
I’ll report back if/when I get a chance to develop my thoughts more.
I think you’re right that there is a routing issue between the WiFi WAN and the wlan. Not sure if it’s even possible to add a static route there but I’ll take a look again.
