[8.5.3] [iPhone USB Tethering Support]

IP Confict issue to be aware of when using USB teathering

When the iPhone (and probally any USB modem or WAN) issues the same subnet as already used elsewhere on the routers networks (including VLANs), the USB connection will fail with errors like “WAN failed SmartCheck”.

In our discovery today, the customer was using 172.20.10.x as the Untagged LAN, the iPhone issued its hotspot network on 172.20.10.x, so we changed the customers network to make the solution work.

Something to be aware of if you find your USB teathering is not working.
Happy teathering,

Good day, tried this a few days ago on a spare device at my office, B-One 5g rev 2 and it was great. This morning trying to add to a couple B-One 5g rev 2 devices and it takes the 8.5.3-024 but then immediately reverts back to 8.5.3.
Tried to make sure I wasn’t doing something stupid before posting, used the same process that I used the other day for a successful install.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hello @tony.linksters1,
Check whether any devices are managed in InControl2, what the firmware policy is at the device level, then at the group level, and finally at the organisation level.

The InControl2 Firmware Policy will override any firmware you manually install on the device if the device has a Subscription (such as Essential Care or Prime Care).

Have a good day,

Another use for iPhone tethering. I have a spare chip, I can put in whatever device I want, either one of the routers, or my iPhone, or my Android phone.

When I’m traveling abroad, I’ll buy the data package for it, and I can put it in the iPhone, or the router as needed. With the iPhone tethering support, I can just leave it in the iPhone, if I want data on the router, I just plug in the iPhone. More convenient that way than swapping the chip.

@WeiMing Does firmware v8.5.4 support iPhone tethering on Balance 20X? It isn’t listed in the release notes, but it looks like from your comment here that support was added for Balance 20X at least in 8.5.3s024

@PepeLeDrew I believe we missed the Balance 20X from the supported list, as we have tested the Balance 20X with firmware 8.5.4 GA, and iPhone tethering is supported.

We will update the firmware 8.5.4 - Release Notes to avoid confusion.

Thanks for highlighting the matter to us; we appreciate it.
