Hi everyone,
I have about 50 devices connected to a Balance 305 and SD-Switch but in IC2 and the 305 interface none of them have names, just IP addresses and MAC addresses which is a bit of a pain. In IC2 I cannot find anywhere to edit the name to rename it to something friendly like “Lee’s ThinkPad” etc.
If I go into the Balance 305 interface and rename it there, then it does seem to push that to IC2. The problem though is it only shows it in IC2 for the Balance 305. So for example my laptop is connected via the SD-Switch so IC2 shows connected to Balance 305 and SD-Switch. If I rename it in the 305 interface, IC2 updates, but if you go into the SD-Switch in IC2 and click Clients it just shows IP and Mac address again.
Is there no way to name a device by MAC address in IC2 so that every Peplink device on the network uses that name? Or do I actually have to log into each device and make the names there?
In IC2 in the device details window there is an “Edit” link in the upper left-hand corner.
When you click on that you can edit information about the device, such as its name:
That should do it.
Cheers,
Z
Sorry I don’t mean rename the Peplink devices, I’m talking about devices like laptops and cellphones, as you can see below when I click a connected device on the Balance 305 it doesn’t show the name of it and there’s no Edit button. I’m only able to give it a name by logging into the Balance 305 directly:

Hello @leemoreau,
The Client information is, from our experience, populated from the device into InControl2, so you need to do the naming in there.

Would you like this moved to a feature request where this can be pushed from InControl2?

This is pretty wonderful - thanks.
But it does raise a UI issue: Discovering this feature of the device status window requires mousing over the row on the name column in the display - there is no documentation in the guide nor visual indicator in the displayed pane that this is an editable field.
Hi Marcus,
I already know how to name them, I actually stated that in my original post. What I’m saying is, if I have a device connected to a SD-Switch connected to a Balance 305, in IC2 it just shows the MAC. If I log into the 305 interface and name it like you show in your screenshot, that works in IC2 when going to the Balance 305 and then Clients. But in IC2 if I click the SD-Switch and then click Clients, it just lists all MAC addresses. So you then have to log into the SD-Switch and from there also give it a name. If I have multiple Peplink devices across our 3 site network, that means I have to log into every single Peplink device to give the device the same name. I don’t understand why I can’t edit a device in IC2 and give it a name, then any time that MAC appears on a device in the same Group it should show the name, just seems backwards and not helpful since it’s not realistic to update device names on every single Peplink device on the network manually like this.
Hello @leemoreau,
I get it, this is a good one for the IC2 team to look at and I do see the same as you when traversing around IC2 on WAPs & SD-Switches.
