WAN Fails Test, Connection Up & Down, Peplink 20x

I’ve tried ever health check method there is, as well as using different hosts. Same issues. And likewise, things were fine originally and got steadily worse until unbearable. Firmware upgrade during this period didn’t change anything. I have given up and hacked together something else for right now until I figure out a better option.

Hello everyone… Just an update… In the mysterious and complicated world of hardware and software bugs, it seems like I have found the cause of my 20X instability… When I disabled the integrated wifi AP, the router became stable again. Could reenable all that good stuff like health checks and whatever…

It seems like originally months ago I fixed this problem by accident and recently in order to get a better signal for a device far away from my pepwave ap one, I enabled the integrated wifi unwittingly and that seems to be what was causing my router to be unstable.

Working on RMA with my vendor.

Good luck everyone…

Are you saying that the 20X was stable when the AP was not in use but was fine when it was disabled?

If that’s the case, I’d strongly suggest you submit a ticket. This very much sounds like a firmware issue, if corroborated, rather than a hardware problem that would be addressed by a return/replacement of the product.

(FWIW, as I’m not on the hardware side of things)

I remember hearing a similar case quite a while back with a balance one.

Turned out the cause was environmental, as the problem only occurred when the device was mounted in the customers rack. Maybe try relocating the device?

I’ve got 60+ peplink units in service, I’m finding that issue a lot on the 20x, I think I found a fix … I don’t like it but 3 days now working fine a system that was dropping wan every 15 to 20min. Try this and post your results:

I put a mini switch between modem and peplink, wan To switch, switch to modem.

so far 3 days no drops, I noted the issue seems to occur most on offices that have the modem more than 25ft from the peplink, offices that the modem and peplink are connected with 3 ft cable no problems

Thread necro but my B20X is having these same issues lately.
Its throwing lots of Failed WAN tests. Several per hour. Sometime it will go a couple hours without a failure. I’m using PING as the health check method. I’ve tried “google.com”, “8.8.8.8”, “8.8.4.4” , and “1.1.1.1” as the hosts. It doesn’t matter. It still says they failed health checks. It will switch over to my backup connection and then a minute later, it will say the primary WAN connection is back up and switch back over. This process will then repeat soon again and again and again. I’ve checked with my ISP and they are telling me my cable modem was online the entire time and they aren’t seeing any dropouts for the times corresponding to when the B20X is telling me the WAN health test failed.

I changed from Xfinity cable modem service to WOW cable modem service and I noticed the increase in failed WAN tests when this happened. Is there anything that can be done? Disabling the WAN health check isn’t an option as I need the router to failover to my T-Mobile SIM in the event there is a real internet outage on the primary WAN.

Try putting a cheap switch between the WAN port and the cable modem. I was getting lots of auto negotiate problems with my cable modem connected to my B One, put a cheap switch between them and problem hasn’t come back in nearly a year. It’s a $10-15 fix and if it doesn’t work you’ve still got a cheap switch =)

I’ll give it a go. I have plenty of small switches laying around. Thanks!
