I’m considering a used Peplink Balance 310 purchased on eBay (paid with credit card) and I need clarification about InControl 2.
Can a used Balance 310 be enrolled and managed in InControl 2?
What happens if the device is still registered under the previous owner’s organization?
What is the exact procedure to take ownership and register it under my account?
My main concern is buying a unit that remains bound to another account. If the device is already registered elsewhere, please advise the proper steps to:
Verify its current registration/warranty status
Request removal from the previous owner’s InControl 2 organization
Provide any proof of purchase you require (eBay order, invoice, serial number)
Confirm whether a support plan or subscription is needed for IC2 access
If the original owner is unresponsive, is there an official process to release the device, or should the unit be returned to the seller? Any best practices before buying (e.g., seller confirmation that the device has been removed from their IC2 org, screenshots, serial checks) would be greatly appreciated.
Short version: If the device is already registered elsewhere, and it cannot be undone by the seller, then don’t buy it. Aside from the downside w.r.t. management, the fact that somebody else has full admin access to your device if you at any point forget to disable IC2 access (e.g. after a factory reset) gives me chills.
Ruminating a bit:
If the seller claims that the unit is “fully functional” (or words to that effect), and it turns out that you cannot register it with your IC2 organization then that is cause for a return (at their expense) and reimbursement, since a key functionality is missing.
FWIW: I’ve had students purchasing Peplink equipment on eBay for class projects, and one of them ran into this. eBay was supportive in handling the return and reimbursement.
I’d recommend simply asking the seller whether the unit will be unregistered from any IC2 organization at the time of delivery.
Some don’t know (don’t buy), some say they cannot de-register the unit (don’t buy), some promise that IC2 will be available for you (then proceed with due diligence w.r.t. whatever other criteria you may apply).
You may also ask whether the unit is currently covered by prime care (or one of the other care supports), as that would provide you with a significant level of surety that you’ll be OK. That is probably not relevant w.r.t. a 310?
