Background:
We often have the real-time usage status window open for one or more routers, just to keep an eye on things.
Objective:
To gain an understanding of the current usage by a single glance (no thinking or evaluation to be required )
Problem/user interface challenge:
With each of the graphs of a router being scaled independently of each other, they are not comparable, i.e., seemingly similar graphs do not necessarily represent similar usage levels (e.g., Cellular 1 may be at 5 Mbps and Cellular 2 may be at half that, 2.5 Mbps - and yet they look like the usage levels are the same unless one looks more closely at the vertical scale):
Feature request:
Either or both of these options to be made available:
-
Allow the user to set fixed scales of the graphs - i.e., they each have a fixed vertical scale, but not necessarily the same scale
Benefits: (a) the user can at a glance evaluate the saturation level for each interface (by setting the scale maximum to be the channel maximum for each), and (b) It is easy to see the relative usage of the various interfaces (e.g., whether one is utilized more or less than another) by setting the vertical maximum for all the graphs to be the same value. -
Allow the user to set the scales to be uniformly, but dynamically, scaled.
Benefits: The user could at a glance see the relative usage of the interfaces, easily comparing traffic on one w.r.t. traffic on another. The presentation would be similar to what we see today (dynamic scaling), but uniform w.r.t. what the graphs represent in terms of height vs. usage.
Importance:
These additional options w.r.t. how the graphs are presented would be quite beneficial in the use cases where the usage graphs are part of systems overview, where extraction of information about systems/network performance needs to be easily performed from the displays without undue cogitation.
Must-have?
No, this is a convenience feature.
