I’m still in the new phase of integrating a Peplink Balance 20x into my network.
I have Starlink as my WAN and in SIM slot B I have a Verizon SIM. Installed in a home network on a fixed shelf that doesn’t see any movement. I notice on my event log that Starlink went out at 9:45 this evening, however, when I check the Starlink app, no downtime was logged in that time frame. Well, whatever, so as it should, it appears the Balance 20x switched over to my Verizon SIM. However, when I’m home 2 hours later, it appears that the Starlink WAN was still trying to obtain an address and 5 times in the that 2 hour space, my Balance event log showed that the SIM was inserted and removed. Of course it was not, because no one was here and its in a difficult high spot to reach without a ladder if they could even find it.
So, I logged into the router, hit the manual disconnect for my Starlink WAN, waited a few seconds, then connected it and applied changes. The Balance 20x immediately hooked in the WAN and switched from the Verizon SIM to Starlink. The weird thing is 2 minutes after going into Standby mode, the event log shows(names/addresses changed to protect the innocent):
Oct 13 23:41:23WAN: B-Slot SIM card inserted in SIM slot B
Oct 13 23:40:35WAN: B-Slot SIM card removed from SIM slot B
Oct 13 23:38:59WAN: B-Slot (Priority 2) standby (100.xx.xxx) in SIM slot B
Oct 13 23:38:59WAN: STARLINK (Priority 1) connected (192.168.xx.xxx)
Oct 13 23:38:53System: Changes applied (I manually disconnected and re-connected STARLINK HERE)
Oct 13 23:37:28Admin: me(192.168.xx.xxx) login successful
Oct 13 23:23:26WAN: B-Slot SIM card inserted in SIM slot B
Oct 13 23:04:11WAN: B-Slot SIM card removed from SIM slot B
Oct 13 22:54:40System: Time synchronization successful
Oct 13 22:54:17WAN: B-Slot SIM card inserted in SIM slot B
Oct 13 22:29:34System: Time synchronization fail
Oct 13 22:02:52WAN: B-Slot SIM card removed from SIM slot B
Oct 13 22:00:07WAN: B-Slot SIM card inserted in SIM slot B
Oct 13 22:00:04WAN: B-Slot SIM card removed from SIM slot B
Oct 13 21:45:39WAN: B-Slot (Priority 2) connected to Verizon Wireless (100.xx.xx.xx) in SIM slot B
Oct 13 21:45:39WAN: STARLINK (Priority 1) disconnected (WAN failed PING test)
My questions are:
Why wouldn’t the Starlink WAN connection automatically jump back if the connection was there, as noted when I got home and physically connected to Starlink’s WiFi?
What causes the Balance to believe that the SIM is being inserted or removed when it is physically not?
Thanks,
Rob
PS- in the 30 minutes of writing this, nothing new is in my Event Logs…
I should also mention, I just changed my network health status on the SIM to PING Cloudflare and Google, as I did with Starlink WAN…
