I just got a Peplink Balance 20 Hardware revision 6 running firmware 6.3.1 build 3138. When I attempted to upgrade the firmware to 7.1 both through admin panel and InControl2 it seems to download the firmware but will eventually just revert to it’s current status with a note in the InControl log “Firmware upgrade failed”. It is on it’s 3rd retry and still failing.
Please reboot the Balance 20 then upgrade again.
Interesting chain of events. Don’t know if it’s a bug or a coincidence.
As I stated I tried to initiate a firmware upgrade via the admin panel and InControl. Actually, I tried InControl first, but it returned a “Firmware upgrade failed” message so then I tried with the admin panel.
In the admin panel it would say something like "Upgrading firmware … " on the system>firmware tab. InControl likewise had a similar message. Eventually the message in the admin panel would revert to the previous message about 7.1 firmware upgrade pending and InControl would display a failed upgrade. InControl then showed [2nd try] with similar results and again at [3rd try] when that failed I waited for the 4th try to begin and hit the cancel button in InControl. I got the warning about the upgrade no longer being handled by InControl and accepted.
When I logged back into the admin control panel on the Balance 20 to reboot it, I checked the firmware tab and it then said “verifying download” and proceeded with the upgrade. It completed and rebooted. I am now running 7.1 so all is good.
I found it both interesting and disconcerting that I cancelling the upgrade in InControl allowed it to complete.
I suspect the Balance 20 is busy during the previous upgrade. Reboot it will help to clear those tasks. Anyway, glad to hear that this helps.
