Incomplete OpenVPN

I Purchased the License for OpenVPN (Slave to a VPN Provider) I spent a good amount of time screwing with this trying to get it working.

I had finally gotten a Green indicator on the OpenVPN Dashboard Bar.

Still no traffic was going in/out via the OpenVPN Connection! Contacted Tech support and after many days they told me that I had to manually create outbound/Inbound rules to route traffic to the VPN! Really why doesn’t the setup for the OpenVPN bar do all this? Is there anyone that would setup an OpenVPN connection and not want to have their data NOT go through that connection?

Very disappointed that this premium purchased feature is incomplete. This feature doesn’t function like all the other dashboard movable bars items. When I move a connection to priority 1 traffic moves through that connection of if the link is green. Completely anti-intuitive that this bar should act differently. Dev team needs to finish the proper implementation of this feature.

Support for how to get this working is also undocumented and frustrating. I honestly would not have purchased this knowing how bad of an experience this was. There is SO much room in the parms of this incomplete feature to explain the work involved to make it route properly.

I would recommend no-one else purchase the OpenVPN license until this is fixed.

This is actually normal for what you’d expect installing OpenVPN on any platform. OpenVPN is documented by the OpenVPN folks. I would probably recommend ChatGPT for help with it.

Peplink spoils you into automating everything when you use their built-in stuff that automates all the routing for you. It sets your expectations really high. OpenVPN is powerful but also tedious, and automatic routing logic is non-existent (beyond the option to run a shell script when the connection goes up/down…you provide the script). I’ve installed OpenVPN on Linux, Windows, Mac, and I always expect to have to add routing. It’s about as manual as it gets, every time.
