Having unit be an NTP time server would be helpful

Any idea when we will see this NTP server feature available?

‘Why would this be useful?’
Because it would eliminate one of several common justifications made by the many manufacturers of poorly secured IOT, NAS, and other resource-constrained consumer devices in particular as to why their product needs to connect to the internet every e.g. 2 seconds which is 86,400 times a day.
Multiply that by e.g. a modest 5 iot devices in a home, and that’s 432,000 internet connections per day just for time-keeping alone.

This sort of thing puts an entire network(s) in danger since it only takes one device to be compromised.

I’d rather have a well-designed, capable router built with security in mind make those connections for all of them, and pass them to the rest of everything else on a network that I can potentially keep on the LAN.

I’m really glad to see this feature getting implemented!

Engineering team still need some times to complete the NTP server feature. We may have test firmware for the feature soon.

I will post again when the test firmware is ready.

I need this for an upcoming project. How far away is it do we think?

@MartinLangmaid, @mldowling, @Rick-DC and other fellow partners :smiling_face_with_three_hearts::smiling_face_with_three_hearts::smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

As promised by Engineering team, the test firmware for LAN NTP server feature is ready for partner. You can download the test firmware using the followings URL:

As for now , the test firmware is only available for the below device models that having RTC Chipset (RTC - Battery powered time storage to keeps time running even router is power off.):

NTP Server Test firmware (8.0.2s052):

Balance One/Balance 210hw4/Balance 310/MAX BR1 ENT/MAX Transit/MAX 700hw3/MAX HD2 mini/MAX HD4(Edited : 21/02/2020):

EPX/SDX/MBX (Edited : 21/02/2020):
https://download.peplink.com/firmware/epx/fw-epx_mbx_sdx-8.0.2s052-build1438.bin

SpeedFusion Engine Cam (Edited : 24/02/2020):

For the above firmware, default NTP server is enabled for the device LAN interface. As for now, we have no WebUI that allow to enable/disable the feature. If the feedback from our fellow partners is good, then the feature will be roll out for the next general release firmware including the option to enable/disable the NTP Server service.

This work speaks very well of Peplink and its responsiveness to users’ and Partners’ requests. Thanks very much. We’ll check it out.

@sitloongs.

i have a customer looking for this feature in the MBX. Would it be possible to get a Test firmware for this model also.

Thanks in advance.

Engineering team is checking on this. I will update again when i get the latest update for the team.

I too would be interested to see this implemented for customers with the Balance 20, as I was the one that started this topic. However since I’m no longer under hardware warranty I don’t see that happening—for me at least.

Device firmware is opened for download without referring to device hardware warranty. As long as your device hardware version is compatible then you can upgrade your device using the latest firmware and enjoys the new features. You can get all the archive firmware here : https://www.peplink.com/support/downloads/archive/

I think the main problem here is the lower end models & old hardware revision and this is not concurrent considered available for the devices.

Hello @sitloongs,
We are looking for some deployments to test this out in the field.
What are the sources for the routers NTP server?
What is the order of preference that these sources are used to reference the routers internal NTP server?

We want to set up as prefered order of sources the following:

  1. Time from GPS
  2. Time from Cellular Network
  3. Time via serial input (used Evertz previously Timing & Synchronization | Solutions by Product Type)
  4. Time from WAN source via NTP
  5. Time from LAN source via NTP
  6. Time from SpeedFusion source via NTP
  7. Time from internal router clock

Others colleagues here will have their preferences.

We realise not all models will be able to do all of these options due to the equipment features such as with the GPS, Cellular & Serail plus available system processing.

Overall this is great to see. We will be going back to previous leads we’ve had with this GPS feature.

Happy to Help,
Marcus

As for now , the LAN NTP service will work as below:

Client devices → LAN NTP → System Time (Router)

System time have 2 sources:

  1. RTC - Battery powered time storage to keeps time running even router is power off.

  2. System (Router) synced with External NTP server

  • Depend on System Time Server settings : LAN/WAN/SpeedFusion

For you requirements above, please send me your project info and we can discuss what we can help for that.

Yes, it’s definitely impressive to see a company focus on quality, good pricing, solid support, and all that while implementing a lot of requested features.
Much respect!

Hello @sitloongs,
The recent 8.0.2 GA release does not appear to contain the new NTP server feature?

Testing on the NTP server within the router so far has been useful. We would like to see the NTP Server become a standard of future releases. Is there a release available with the NTP Server with 8.0.2 ?
Happy to Help,
Marcus

As for now the NTP server firmware still in testing phase. I can definitely check with Engineering team whether we can release a test firmware for 8.0.2. Please stay tuned.

Could we get a firmware for the BPL-380 with the NTP over LAN we need this for a deployment.
PS: The firmware we had for the MBX is working like a charm with NTP over Lan! Customer is really happy with it.

Thanks in advance.
