This is now resolved. In documenting information for this post, I realized that something that I had written initially wasn’t right. When trying to get the correct info, I realized that I had a VLAN config issue. When trying to fix that, I tried rebooting the AP after changing the port config. That appears to have fixed things.
The original post is below, showing the wrong way to do networking. (Hint: the wrong way involves changing many variables at once and not documenting changes made in attempting to restore service.) My post-resolution thoughts are in brackets below.
I have a Balance One and AP One Mini at home; I’m using the Balance to manage the Mini. They worked great until I reorganized my home office. Upon reconnection of everything, the Mini won’t let users pass traffic. I’m looking for guidance to restore service.
The Balance One can see and manage the AP One Mini. Clients take a long time to “connect” to the AP and the Windows clients report “No Internet.” The Wireless Client page on the Balance has a line showing the client with no IP address [That wasn’t correct; I tried again and got an address] an IP address, but it’s an IP pulled from the subnet associated with the VLAN attached to the port, rather than from the SSID used. [I had seen this earlier and tried the next step.] If I change the port to be Trunk rather than Access, the Balance stops seeing the Mini. [Well, that might have been true, but I’m now not sure. The issue was either that I had set the port to be Trunk with a specific VLAN (rather than Any) or that I hadn’t rebooted the AP after changing its uplink. I’ve now done both, and it’s working.]
I’ve reset and reconfigured the Mini multiple times, I’ve had the Balance “forget” the Mini then reconfigured it, I’ve tried different cables and different ports, and even a second Mini. So far, nothing has restored service. [That’s because I was focused on the Mini and not on the Balance port’s VLAN misconfiguration.]
As background, the Balance is configured with VLANs. I’ve made lots of undocumented [now we’re getting at the heart of the problem] changes while troubleshooting and don’t recall the VLAN configuration of the Balance One port used by the One Mini,
I’d appreciate any guidance the community can give to help me restore service, even if it means starting from scratch? [Real moral of story: describe the problem for others rather than for yourself. You’ll be more explicit, gather more accurate data to give them an understanding of the situation, and maybe even resolve things yourself.]
