Firmware 8 compatibility

If I upgrade my Peplink Balance to version 8 of firmware will all my older firmware BR’s still work until I can upgrade them? (I have 10 or more BR’s on various versions of FW)

Hi Brad,

We tend to post any issues with compatibility in the firmware release notes.
You won’t be able to establish SpeedFusion tunnels with devices running Firmware 6.1 or older.
Firmware 8.0 release notes state:

  • For BR1 series, the unit must be upgraded to Firmware 7.1.2 first before upgrading to 8.0.0

  • PepVPN backward compatibility option is no longer available. By deprecating the old
firmware versions, we now have a more secure handshake channel as the default setting, only TLS 1.2 will be accepted, no more TLS 1.0 and 1.1 for the old devices. Thus, if you are using devices running Firmware 6.1 or older, you will no longer be able to form PepVPN tunnels with those devices unless the firmware is updated.

The firmware, release notes and user manual can be downloaded from our website.

So as long as I’m on something higher than 6.1 the existing firmware will establish its tunnel and I can update them at that point – right? Am I better off updating all the remote units first and then updating the Balance last?

Yes, that is correct.

It is irrelevant from the point of view of the Peplink routers which one is updated first.
I guess you have to work out what causes the least downtime for your situation.
