Fast / HOT failover

Trying to see if this will work for a fast turn. 2 Br1 max5g, one on tmo one on att, both going to a unifi UCG device, wan 1 - 2. thoughts? we will be in south america and trying to find any possible way of backups for connectivity. the switch between sims is a bit too much. any words of wisdom will be super appreciated

I will start this by saying that I may not know the regional SKUs for your area, there could be differences, your sales rep can correct anything I get wrong.

The Br1/2 series is designed for mobile applications (but can be used in fixed environments just fine). It has a wider temperature range and metal case.

You can accomplish this in a few ways.

1: A Max Br2 Pro has 2 cell modems and can switch between them or load balance automatically. You can also have additional connections via usb, 2 physical WANs and virtual WANs if you wanted to add starlink, additional cell modems or some other high speed link in the future. Total router throughput is about 1Gbit. Also it’s the most expensive option by far (around $2800 usd) but could be the best single device solution, having the smallest footprint and lowest power budget compared to the options below.

2: Two Max Br1 Pro 5G could connect to your unify router as you mentioned in your post, this will work fine, the router throughput of each is around 1Gbit, realistically you will probably be limited by your cellular speeds in the area. You could also stack the Br1 Pro’s with the second device plugged in to the firsts WAN and let the first device act as your router. Any additional expansion would have to be handled by WIFI WAN, or virtual WAN connections. Adding additional connections is more limited but easily doable. (total cost around $2000 usd)

3: Two Max Br1 Mini 5G. Either of the setups mentioned in 2 would work fine with these devices. Expandability with WIFI WAN is limited to if you buy the version with WIFI. Router throughput is limited to around 300Mbit for each unit, depending on the cellular in your area, this may be quite a limit or not a factor at all. (total cost around $1000-1100 usd depending on WIFI)

If this is a fixed location, you can also look at the various choices outside the BR line

4: B One 5G has 1 internal 5G modem and can support more externally via USB or ethernet. Router has around 1Gbit throughput. You could just buy 2 of them and use them as mobile hotspots to your unifi setup, buy 2 of them and use them stacked as described above or mix and match them with other devices in the stack. Pairing one of them with a Br1 Pro 5G, Pr1 Mini 5G or other 5G router of your choice works. (total cost for 2 of them would be around $1200 usd)

Peplink does have a Pepwave 5G Adapter that would suit your needs too but at this time I don’t believe it has a global SKU, ask your sales rep. (total cost for 2 of them would be around $800 usd if they become available for your region)

There are actually quite a few other choices in the stack too depending on needs and future expansion requirements, I just covered the lower end of the 5G products. There is a good comparison tool available too
